WHAT'S GOING ON
AT OUMC?

How can you
REPRESENT
ORCHARDS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH?

by purchasing our
NEW RE-Designed t-shirt!

$15 each
Order by June 17th
Pick-up TBD
(hopefully before July 7th)

Order forms are located in the
Narthex next to the Name tags or
contact Sherry Hibbs with your order.

These will be great to wear at Orchards Glen or anytime you're out and about serving in the community.

In order to get this great price, we need to have at least  40 shirts ordered and we're half way there. Don't miss out on yours!
"Tall" sizes are also available.  There is a separate order sheet for those.

Please contact Sherry for that info.

End of Year
 Celebration
  will be happening on
June 9th
after worship at the church.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers   will be provided. Please bring a side or   dessert to share. We will eat outside   possibly (if it doesn't look to uneven on the   grassy area) or downstairs.

Honoring
Thy Father
(grandfathers, papas, uncles,   and other important men in
our lives too)

This year, we will be offering  (by donation)   boutonnieres on
Father's Day - June 16th
to help us honor the wonderful men in our   lives. All proceeds will go towards the All   Church Retreat Fund to help keep the   costs low.

You can also purchase one in memory of   an important man in your life. Let's try to   make sure all the wonderful men in our   congregation are sporting a boutonniere   on Father's Day.

Summertime
Read & Play

This summer, we're heading out to
meet, love, and serve our neighbors at   Orchards Glen Apartments  Tuesdays
and Thursdays, 4:30-6:30pm (4:00-   7:00 including setup and cleanup). Many   of the kids who live there are connected   with the Family Resource Center at   Orchards Elementary. Each Tuesday and   Thursday throughout the summer, we'll   provide food, a group game, and   opportunities to read together in pairs or   small groups.

Volunteers are needed to make this a   success! We need:
  • Food! We're starting with a Kickoff Barbecue Thursday, June 20, 4:30-6:30pm. After that, we'd prefer to continue providing meals each Tuesday and Thursday. If you'd like to help prepare meals, resources are available to reimburse food purchases. Mike Coats is coordinating food.
  • Game Leaders! Between food and reading, we'll have a short group game. Elaine Walker is putting together games and supplies.
  • LOTS and LOTS of READERS! We're hoping to sign up ten readers for each session. Reading begins at 5:30pm, so readers should plan on being there around 5:15pm.
Rachon Hanson is coordinating   volunteers.  You can sign up on the board
in the Narthex, or contact  Rachon  at 206-   551-5424 or  rachonhanson@gmail.com .

Join us on June 16th
after Worship

We will have a Summertime Read &   Play Kick-off during Fellowship Time.   During this time we will share our plans   for  meeting our neighbors at Orchards   Glen this summer and help people   volunteer.
WHAT'S GOING ON
IN OUR COMMUNITY?

You helped create paths to more   housing:
  •  Housing Trust Fund was funded at $175M,   including $5M for farmworker housing and $24M   for mental health-related housing
  • Housing & Essential Needs (HEN) was funded at $73.7M, an increase of $14.5M.
  • Sales Tax Bonding (SHB 1406 Robinson) allows local government to reserve a portion of sales tax to use toward affordable housing without raising sales tax.
  • Religious Zoning (SHB 1377 Walen) helps faith communities build affordable housing on their properties through a zoning density bonus.
  • Eviction Reform (ESSB 5600 Kuderer) reduces homelessness by extending the notice to evict from 3 to 14 days.
For those who attended the Faith Partners   4 Housing presentation this last week end,   you will notice the Sales Tax Bonding item,   which was discussed. This could provide   additional funding locally, but our   representative will need to take action to   make this happen.  Your advocacy will be   helpful.

You may also notice the Religious Zoning   item which allows communities of faith   use their property to increase housing in   our communities.

Your actions move us toward   environmental sustainability:
  • 100% Clean Electricity (E2SSB 5116 Carlyle) will rid Washington State's electric grid of fossil fuels by 2045.
  • Orca Emergency Response: Oil Spill Prevention (ESHB 1578 Lekanoff) prevents oil spills by extending tug escorts for vessels transporting crude materials in the waters around the San Juan islands.
  • Orca Emergency Response: Toxic Pollution (SSB 5135 Rolfes) will identify and reduce top pollutant chemicals, making our communities and waterways safer.
  • Orca Emergency Response: Stakeholder process for Lower Snake River dams - this was fully-funded in the budget so that communities can have a say in the future of dams on the Lower Snake River, and it increases spill-over for salmon.
  • Healthy Environment for All (HEAL) Act (2SSB 5489 SaldaƱa) did not pass but was included as a budget proviso. This establishes the definition of environmental justice and guides communities in addressing environmental health disparities.
