Since 2009, the first Wednesday in June has been designated as National Running Day (or Global Running Day). Originally designed as a day for runners to reaffirm their passion for running, it’s also a good day for beginners to begin a life-changing commitment to running.
For some of us, running is a daily routine. The moment we awaken, our mission is to complete a set distance. We may have a partner or go it alone. Others fit in a run when time allows or at the end of the workday. The
marathoner will train on a schedule. Dedicated runners know they have to take care of their
feet, knees and eat right to maintain their bodies for the road.
Whatever the distance, National Running Day is about placing one foot in front of the other and setting a pace. Whether you run a few miles or just around the block, by yourself, with a buddy or on one of our JSRC group runs, just get out and do it.

Summer Running is here!
Staying healthy in the sun.
|
|
The Spring Lake 5 marks the official start to Summer for many of the shore area runners. No more long sleeves, hats, gloves and closed rest rooms. Now we just worry about parking and finding some shade to run in or run earlier or later to avoid the heat.
|
|
NATIONAL HYDRATION DAY
June 23
Games get intense under the hot summer sun and we need to replace fluids lost in the heat of battle.
Did you know the human body contains more than 60 percent water? Maintaining that balance while training is a challenge, doing it during the summer months is a practice that must be consistent. Becoming overheated or dehydrated can lead to heat stroke and possibly death.
There are ways to help prevent dehydration. Being hydrated before a workout even begins is important. If you are under hydrated before you start it’s hard to catch up once the sweating starts. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the training. These can include sports drinks which contain electrolytes (Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium and Potassium) to replenish the essential minerals the body loses through perspiration.

Tracey Paulsen
Tracey Paulsen started running about 10 years ago to aid in her weight loss journey of 100 pounds. This past year, she completed her first full Ironman and is not sure if it will be her last, so as of now, 26.2 miles remain her longest distance. She's run it three times and is scheduled to run another marathon in the fall: the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Tracey runs for fun and to complete. She insists she is not a racer! She loves the joy running brings and the people it draws. She is a new resident of NJ, and purchased a home in Shark River Hills in December. She and her husband divide their time between here and NYC. She swims, rides and runs — and belongs to a team in NYC. Tracey is thrilled to find like-minded individuals here in her new home state! Welcome!

Kevin Shinn
Kevin recently joined and is looking forward to running with our groups.
He says he loves running 5Ks and his Brick Reservoir PR this year is 23:40. The reservoir is where he tracks his quarter mile pace. He told us his best PR was two years ago at Meridian Health which was 21:53. He hopes to beat that mark by the end of the year. He also runs longer distances—five to six miles on the Belmar and Spring Lake Boardwalks. Kevin works at Lowes and at Gold's Gym as a customer service associate. He also likes to go bicycling, indoor rock climbing, taking long walks, hiking and camping.
He says "Running with a group of friends will be exciting. I have been
participating in the majority of my 5Ks since 2007 alone." He can't wait to get started. Welcome!

June is National Safety Month
|
|
Injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. The good news is there are many things people can do to stay safe and prevent injuries. During National Safety Month, everyone is encouraged to learn more about important safety issues like preventing poisonings, transportation safety, and slips, trips, and falls.
Did you know that nine out of 10 poisonings happen right at home? You can be poisoned by many things, like cleaning products or another person’s medicine.
Other causes of injury in the home are slips, trips, and falls. More than one in four older adults fall each year often resulting in broken bones or head injuries.
Doing other activities while driving – like texting or eating – distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost one in six crashes where someone is injured involves distracted driving.

Summer running tips:
Do it early
Studies show a direct relation between higher temperatures and lower performance for elite runners.
For a 5K or 10K run, temperatures above 63 degrees Fahrenheit can begin to hinder performance in female runners.
In order to minimize the effects of
hot summer days
on your workout, schedule your run early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the temperatures aren’t as high.
Wear the correct gear
Choose clothing made from technical fabrics designed to perform in the heat. There are many lightweight pieces that have vents or mesh to allow for maximum breathability, fabrics that wick moisture in order to keep you dry, and itms that also have
sun protection.
Don’t forget about your feet
It’s equally (if not more) important to wear socks that wick, cushion and keep you cool. Look for styles that feature padding around the ankle, in the heel and the ball of the foot, as well as some arch support, for added comfort. Toe socks are a great option to help prevent blisters from developing between your toes.
For an extra oomph, dab a bit of peppermint oil to the soles of your feet before putting your socks on. Not only will this help keep your feet cool, but the antibacterial properties can help fight bacteria from developing
during your run
.
Kick hydration up a notch
It goes without saying that you need to pay extra attention to
stay hydrated
in hot weather. The amount of water you need varies depending on your body mass, the day’s temperature and the intensity of your workout. Generally, you should drink about 16 ounces of water before you start and 16 ounces for every hour you run in order to maintain proper hydration.
Make sure you don't drink too much water, as over-hydration can dilute your body’s blood sodium levels causing hyponatremia. The best way to know how much water you need to drink is to follow your thirst as the human body is built with an amazing water-balancing mechanism.
|
|
Slow it down
As temperatures rise, the heart works harder to deliver blood to your muscles while also attempting to regulate body temperature, which can result in a higher
heart rate
at the same running pace. You’ll notice your pace automatically slows down as the days get hotter. Don’t fight it. You can safely run the same distance in the summer if you do so at a slower pace. Pay close attention to how you feel and add more walk breaks as needed.
Mind the chafing
Chafing can be worse in the summer as sweat creates added friction between skin-to-skin and skin-to-clothing rubbing. Prevent this by wearing shorts that cover your upper thighs and a bra with flat or covered seams. Be sure the
bra
you’re wearing isn’t too tight as it can dig into the skin and chafe. You also want to avoid baggy clothing, since the added material can cause irritation. For other vulnerable areas, such as underarms, apply sports lubricant or Vaseline.
Do not run with earphones
Most runners have the bad habit of tuning out while running, and consistent loud music makes it easier to escape from the hyper-alertness of our everyday lives. When we dull our senses, we are less effective in the case of a surprise. If you must run with music, only use one earpiece, and switch ears during your run.
Run against traffic
It makes it easier to see a vehicle coming, and it also helps prevent traffic related accidents, especially if you like to run in the early morning or at dusk.
