Have some 'Old School' fun and support LACOE students

The African American Heritage Committee is hosting a fundraising party featuring Old School music from the 60s to the 90s on Oct. 19, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the French Quarter Creole Bar & Grill in Bellflower. Funds raised will support the committee's scholarship program for LACOE students .

Career Growth Workshop on Oct. 25: Structured Interviews

The next Career Growth Workshop training by the Personnel Commission, scheduled on Oct. 25 at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the PC Testing Room, will cover strategies to achieve success in a structured interview, including preparation, research and what to do during the interview. Participants will have a chance to practice their interviewing skills in a guided exercise.

Shoes That Fit kick-off party on Nov. 9

Thanks to the generosity of LACOE staff, more than 170 pairs of shoes were donated last year to students in need.

As part of an annual holiday tradition, staff will once again partner with several local schools in providing brand new shoes to deserving students through the Shoes That Fit program. The kick-off party for the Shoes That Fit sign-up will be on Friday, November 9 at ECW 203.

LACOE announced the 16 L.A. County Teachers of the Year on Sept. 21 in Universal City. They include Michael Henges, shown here with County Board of Education Vice President James Cross and LACOE Superintendent Debra Duardo. Henges, who teaches at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach USD, and Kim Holz, a 4th-grade teacher at Opal Robinson Elementary in Manhattan Beach USD, have been selected as two of the five California Teachers of the Year .

Bone marrow donors needed

On Oct. 8, a stem cell match was found for Downey-Montebello and Mid-Cities SELPAs Director Ray Guilleaume, who is in need of a bone marrow transplant. The search continues for prospective donors between the ages of 18 and 44 to help many others in desperate need for a match. " Be the Match" will have an information table at the ECW lobby on Monday, Nov. 5, from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Implementing California's History-Social Science Framework

LACOE has received funding to provide professional learning, resources and support at no cost for K-12 history-social science teachers, administrators and paraprofessionals. The goal is to move beyond an overview toward full implementation of the new framework. Three kick-off trainings are being offered; openings still available in the training set for Dec. 4-5.

Effort aims to build school capacity to address trauma

UCLA's Tyrone Howard was among the presenters at a Sept. 17 event kicking off a new initiative to support a trauma-informed approach in schools. LACOE, the Dept. of Mental Health and other agencies will offer professional development and enhanced resources to schools countywide.

LACOE's annual Fiscal Training Summit on Sept. 29 offered proactive tools to review, evaluate and take action before issuing bond indebtedness. Presentations from L.A. County Treasurer and Tax Collector and Auditor-Controller were also featured.

Program helps schools address disparities in student opportunities and outcomes

Supporting educators in meeting the diverse needs of all learners is the mission of LACOE's Center for District Capacity Building. The center will offer a 3-day series beginning Oct. 29 on K-5 Reading Foundational Skills  with a focus on assessments that can be used in a Multi-Tiered System of Support for all students.
