Reflection for Worship. . .

Acts 2:1-21

The Birthday of the Church. That's what Pentecost is often called. The Holy Spirit, one of the "Persons" of God, joins a huge crowd of Jewish people celebrating the Jewish holiday in Jerusalem. And then the Spirit lands on this group of Jesus Movement disciples who are having a reunion. They all begin to speak at once in different languages which confuses the larger crowd but gets the disciples excited and energized. And off they go to establish Jesus communities around the world - the first "Emerging Church" of its kind.

We have some choices right now as a "land-less" congregation. We can decide that our old ways were the best ways, those are dying so we are a dying church. OR we can decide that our old ways were great fertilizer for the future - we have some new options, new ways of being - and we are RE-EMERGING in a new form - being RE-BORN as a congregation. It's a way off thinking, a way of BEING. Let's explore the future together.

"The Emerging Church is a Christian movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries that crosses a number of theological boundaries: participants are variously described as Protestant, post-Protestant, evangelical, post-evangelical, liberal, post-liberal, conservative, post-conservative, anabaptist, reformed, charismatic, neo-charismatic, and post-charismatic...
"Proponents believe the movement transcends the "modernist" labels of "conservative" and "liberal," calling the movement a "conversation" to emphasize its developing and decentralized nature, its vast range of standpoints, and its commitment to dialogue. Participants seek to live their faith in what they believe to be a "postmodern" society...
"Emerging churches are fluid, hard to define, and varied; they contrast themselves with what has gone before in referring to the latter as the "inherited church." Key themes of the emerging church are couched in the language of reform, praxis-oriented lifestyles, post-evangelical thought, and incorporation or acknowledgment of political and postmodern elements.

FATHER'S DAY

Father's Day is coming up on June 16th. Feel free to bring a photo of your father / grandfather and anyone who fathered you. We will have a table at the front of the chapel for display and we can tell stories after worship. Let's celebrate our "Dads!"

Our "altar" on Mothers' Day was a lovely source of stories and inspiration. We hope to do the same on Fathers' Day.

Lu & Bruno Nguyen's Post Wedding Celebration

As you all know, Bruno and I were (finally) married late last year, during a really busy and hectic time - with it being a little over a week until Christmas and with the church packing and moving shortly thereafter. With the love and support of family, a few dear friends, and in particular Marlene, as well as Sallie - we pulled off a beautiful and intimate ceremony. During this time, my best friend Marjorie Scanlan wanted to throw us a wedding shower, but it was simply impossible due to planning and time constraints. Now, after 5 months of trying to coordinate our schedules and settle on a date, I am finally able to celebrate with my beloved church family and friends. So please join us in Fellowship Hall at FUMC on Saturday, June 8th, from 1-4 p.m. for some  food, laughter and festivities. Hopefully you are able to attend, and if so, please RSVP to the email invitation that was sent out, or to Lu Nguyen. Thanks!

Graciously hosted by Marjorie Scanlan.

Free Monthly Concerts on the Third Saturday of each month, at 4:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, Pasadena

June 15 - Outdoor Jazz Concert featuring the Thursday Morning Little Big Band
A favorite from past seasons, the Thursday Morning Little Big Band returns for an open-air concert of classic jazz on the courtyard  in front of the church building.

July 20 - Christmas in July: Aaron Shows, organist
There is so much great Christmas music - why not enjoy it mid-year? Always striving first to connect emotionally with audiences of every age through music, Aaron Shows' performances and compositions often bridge the traditional and modern.

Pasadena Chalk Walk June 15th & 16th, 10:00 am - 7:00pm

The Pasadena Chalk Festival began in 1993 after a summer intern at the Light Bringer Project attended a street painting festival in Paris and brought back her amazing pictures and observations. The first "Chalk on the Walk" took place at Centennial Square at Pasadena City Hall with over 150 visual artists participating in the first Los Angeles-area event.

Lamplighters is sponsoring, but everyone is welcome. Live Music and entertainment all day!

HOLLYWOOD BOWL SUMMER OUTING
Smooth  Summer  Jazz
Sunday, August 18th at 6 p.m.

Please join Membership Ministry this summer at the Bowl for their annual mini-festival dedicated to the smoothest jazz sounds around-featuring The Commodores and Dave Koz & Friends. Tickets are $36 each, with a total of 30 tickets reserved for our group and a deadline of July 1st to turn in any tickets that are unused. Please see Lu Nguyen to secure a spot and pay. As we have done in the past, we will meet before the concert for a potluck dinner and time for fellowship, then head into the Bowl to enjoy the concert. It should be another wonderful evening under the stars. Come and join us!!!

New Bibles to be Dedicated and Placed in our Pews

Due to the extra pews in our new worship space, Nina has purchased new Bibles to fill the extra pews and you are invited to buy a few to dedicate to someone. Please leave a check for Nina in the amount of $20 with the dedication you wish to be included in the front inside of the Bible. We suggest only 1 or 2 persons be listed in each Bible so that each is more personal.
