Updates and news from UNMC Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Message from the Chief
The first day of Summer is June 21…..finally!! Congratulations to Dr. Stephan Barrientos who is graduating from our plastic surgery residency program at the end of June. We wish him continued success as he begins his Craniofacial fellowship in Dallas. June is also Dr. Reilly’s last month as she transitions into semi-retirement. We wish her the best of luck with her future endeavors. Kudos to our former plastic surgery resident, Ricky Brown, MD who has published his first book entitled “The Real Beauty Bible. Navigating your journey through plastic surgery.”  The book is a patient centered approach to explaining different procedures, choosing your plastic surgeon, board certification, what to expect and much more. The book is available at Amazon. In addition Dr. Chris Trahan and his group published a seminal paper in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal in April entitled “Myth-Busting the DIEP flap and introduction to the abdominal perforator Exchange (APEX) Breast Reconstruction Technique:  A Single-Surgeon Retrospective Review.” Former residents who are making us all proud.

Like Father Like Son
Dr. Ronald Hollins has been a professor with UNMC since 1991. He started the division of Plastic Surgery which has since grown exponentially. He practices all aspects of plastic surgery including cosmetic and reconstructive surgery as well as injectables. His son, Andy Hollins, was recently matched with the Duke integrated plastic surgery residency.
"I think Andy really wanted to find something different in Medicine." said Dr. Hollins. "His mom, Dr. Susan Hollins, is a pediatrician and he tried hard to find a specialty that didn't mimic his parents. He soon realized that this was the most challenging and rewarding surgical specialty." Andy Hollins, MD attended UNL for his undergraduate degree and UNMC for his medical school graduating in 2018. He moved out to Durham in June and started his residency July 1, 2019. He and his wife welcomed their first child in January. Dr. Hollins and his wife are very proud of Andy and think "he has made an excellent career choice." Their daughter, Sarah, is married to Dr. Eric Nagengast. Eric is also enrolled in the intergraded plastic surgery program at USC. "It is fun to come home and talk shop with Andy and Eric, to see their excitement about the things they are learning and doing." Dr. Hollins says.
Platelet Rich Fibrin(PRF)

Dreams Med Spa is now offering Platelet- Rich Fibrin (PRF) to clients. The use of patient’s own blood concentrates are becoming more popular in aesthetics. Fibrin is a biological scaffold that forms in response to an injury anywhere in the body. Platelets normally circulate within the blood and will bind to a scaffold of fibrin. When platelets bind to the fibrin scaffold, they become activated and release growth factors. These growth factors start the wound healing process by creating new skin cells, collagen and blood vessels. Historically, Platelet- Rich Plasma (PRP) has been the mainstream in the aesthetic field. PRF is considered superior to PRP as it is an all- natural alternative; it contains no coating, additive or anticoagulant in the collection tubes. PRF is proven to release a higher concentration of growth factors for a longer period of time compared to PRP. In cosmetic treatments, PRF is used to accelerate the wound healing process and reduce scarring. In aesthetics, PRF is used alone or in combination with collagen induction therapy (laser resurfacing, micro needling) to treat: dark circles, acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots and volume loss to name a few.

Extraordinary Nurses 2019
Each year, Nebraska Medicine recognizes very special nurses who exemplify extraordinary care in each of our clinical areas. These Extraordinary Nurses are formally recognized at the annual Nurses Week ceremony. The 2019 Extraordinary Nurse recipients are Jodie Armstrong, BSN, RN, LE for Dreams Medspa and Katy Donner, BSN, RN for Village Pointe Plastic Surgery Clinic. These amazing nurses consistently serve as patient advocates, demonstrate open communication, trust and respect to others, model positive professional behavior, adapt to changes in workload while maintaining quality patient care and provide expert and compassionate care to patients and their families. Congratulations, and thank you for all you do!

Dr. Reilly Retirement
A few parting words from Dr. Reilly:
June 30, 2019 will mark a milestone for me in my medical career. This will be the last day of academic service since I started in Kindergarten! I have made the difficult decision that my next few years in medicine should be more devoted to my overseas medical mission work. As y'all know, my passion in plastic surgery has always been for the burn injured patient. I will now have the time to devote to working with low/middle income countries teaching and training their next generation of burn care providers. While I will still be working part time - this will be done in the context of burn units in the USA and abroad. I have truly loved my 17+ years at UNMC-NM. I have grown as a surgeon and as a woman thru the interactions with our staff and my patients. Thank you all - from myself and my supportive husband Bob. Wish us luck on our journey and please continue to make Nebraska Medicine an extraordinary place.
