Pentecost 2019
This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, that festival of communication and understanding. Licked by tongues of flame and filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ disciples found themselves suddenly able to speak in many different languages and be understood by native speakers, “devout Jews from every nation under heaven.” What seems at first like a reversal of Babel becomes something even better: God’s reaffirmation of the variety of languages in which human beings speak of the things that matter most. So, on Pentecost , rather than scattering in confusion, people of many tongues gather close and listen together.

A major theme we will be exploring in worship together is this: comprehending “God’s deeds of power” —the freeing of Jesus from death, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit—requires more than finding the equivalent expression in our own language . Comprehension does not arrive, once and for all, once we have looked up all the words. For example, we glimpse the meaning of Easter intermittently in the life we share with others and those who heard the disciples preach on Pentecost comprehended the message in their own language. But that was only the beginning . It was in the life they lived together that their answers to “What does this mean?” began to take shape. And it was the life they lived together that inspired others to try to answer that question as well.

I look forward to seeing those who are able to be here on Sunday.

Blessings,

Scott Kenefake

Looking for some summer fun?! Sign up to help with VBS and help our children in the church learn about God through fun, recreation, music, and art. VBS is possible because of the help of our Middle and High School Youth and Adult volunteers. Thank you for signing up to so that we can provide a fun, safe, environment for the children of our church and community to learn and grow.
Are you a Middle or High School youth or an adult who wants to help with VBS Summer Camp?

Volunteer forms are available on the church’s website or in the church office.

There will be two volunteer training times offered on Sunday morning at 9am in Davis Hall on June 9th and 16th. You only need to attend one session. We will cover theme and story overviews, best practices for working with young children, share what the VBS schedule will look like, and answer any questions you have.
