Our God is with Us!

"...an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.' All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

'Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel',
which means, 'God is with us.' "         -  Matthew 1:20-23

Dear friends, this is the week that we will gather to hear and sing about this thing that God has done to "save all his people from their sins." We will see our children tell this story on Sunday at 10:30 in our pageant.  We will proclaim it on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  We will continue to ponder the depth of Jesus' birth, life, and death for the entirety of this year until we hear it again next December.

Two things stand out to me in this short passage from Matthew.  First, Jesus fulfills the promise God pronounces through the prophet Isaiah that our God is a God who is with us.  He is our Emmanuel.  God has always been with His people, but in Jesus something new happens that permeates everything forevermore.  God literally comes into our midst as one of us and walks with us and tells us about who God is.  He comes and shows us that God seeks to not have any barriers in our relationship with Him.  Then he gives himself to defeat death so that not even in dying can we be separated from God.

This leads to the second thing that stands out.  Jesus came to save people from our sins.  So often, when we talk about sin, people worry that the conversation is about feeling guilty.  I'd like to offer some peace to that concern.  Sin is anything that separates us from God and it is God's desire to remove that separation.  Jesus came not to focus on the things that have been detrimental to our relationship, but to relieve us of those things, to lift that weight off of us, to release us from the bondage suffered from our separation.  So, as we greet our Emmanuel this week, I pray you will gaze upon the one who came to fulfill the promise that we have been freed from our separation and united to the one who has loved us from the beginning and will love us to the end.  Thanks be to God!

See you in church,

with Fr Korey Wright

What is Liturgy? We know it to be about Hymns, and Order and Beauty and Prayer and Communion. We know it to be about Worship. But is there more to Liturgy? Come join Fr. Korey Wright as we explore that question. We'll watch videos (one video being from the band Coldplay, the greatest band on earth) and we'll talk about other stuff that seems to have nothing to do with Liturgy, but actually has everything to do with Liturgy. See you in Sunday School.
