Thanksgiving Feast This Sunday
"Enriching Your Marriage" Concluded Last Monday
Reported by Mrs. Lara Milian Bardizbanian

This Monday 11/12/2018 marked the fifth and final session of the "Enriching Your Marriage" series at St. Sarkis. As in previous weeks, the couples started off the evening engaged in fellowship with their children and friends while enjoying a homemade meal lovingly prepared by Tsoler Babikian Janian.

This week's presentation by Der Nareg focused on commitment, specifically loving, respecting and cherishing each other. He explained that when we commit by saying "I do", everything is based on that answer. Love is not always contingent on being happy. Love is a choice in Christian marriage and that the sacrament of marriage is the beginning of the journey, with the end being eternal life. Der Nareg encouraged the couples to imitate the love of God in their households and to live that love in their lives. Of course this is not always easy, he noted, but with forgiveness and some thoughtful boundaries, people who want to be close to God have to be challenged to get closer to Him. Those who work on their awareness are more likely to acquire the skills and grace necessary for a successful partnership.

Following a brief conversation where some gave feedback and shared their takeaways from the course, it was clear that most felt this was a positive stepping stone in learning the key points to enriching a marriage. Specifically the stories and examples that Der Nareg offered throughout the sessions, helped the couples have a clearer understanding of how these principles apply. Amongst several helpful resources that were shared throughout the 5 weeks, Der Nareg and Yeretzgeen Annie generously gifted each couple with a copy of the book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, to guide them further on their marital journey. At the evening's completion, Der Nareg thanked several individuals for their gracious contributions and the couples joined their children in the main hall for a ceremonious group photo.

"Enriching Your Marriage" Concluded Last Monday
On Sunday November 11th 2018, The Sunday School of St. Sarkis Church finally commenced. Such joy entered our hearts when we saw the smiling faces of our students running to their classes. As teachers we were all ready and prepared to fulfill our duties of spreading the word of the gospel to our young ones. Everyone was so excited to join together as one and embrace our faith. The best part was going to church and listening to Der Nareg encouraging the students to listen to words of St. Paul from the Epistle to the Ephesians and live a mindful life, the way that wise people live.

We look forward for our upcoming Sunday School sessions to continue our journey together and grow in our Christian faith.

Saint Sarkis Basketball News - spirits are way UP
Any game day when 2 Saint Sarkis teams win their basketball games is a cause for celebration, and this past Sunday both our Girls and Junior Boys teams were winners.

Saint Sarkis Girls, the League Champions, outplayed a very good St. Thomas team on November 4 and won against Sts. Vartanantz past Sunday, sporting a 4-0 record. In addition to strong play from the veteran players, the Shulman/Sandaljian twins and Tonya Orangian we feel very good on the ever improving play of Alicia Morgikian and rookies Olivia Nercessian and Maria Skaliagas. Our team is getting stronger and more confident in its play and we look forward to exciting games ahead.

Our Junior Boys team, have a 3 win 1 loss record in 4 games, which seems incredible after a 0-10 first season last year. This year the team added a few strong players and with the excellent coaching of Arry Nalbandian and Mr. Varadi the 2nd season looks quite promising.

In a reversal of last year's play, this year our team has to hold back against teams that are re-building. In our last game against last year's champs St. Leon, our starters built a quick 11-0 lead which the team did not relinquish. The "bench" played well preserving the lead and getting substantial play time. Another good and encouraging thing is that the team seems to be a tight knit group, enjoying not only practice and game times, but also after church and school non basketball activities together.

Exciting times ahead??. Feels that way and we would like to ask all to come join the parents in cheering out teams on.  Our next New York games will be at Van Buren High School on December 9, starting at 2:00 pm.

Look forward to seeing you there.
Let's Go Saint Sarkis.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS (1.1-11)
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ-to the glory and praise of God.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (9:44-50)
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, "Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men." But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all-he is the greatest."
"Master," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
The Holy Apostles Andrew And Philip
The word apostle refers to the special inner circle of Jesus' disciples, chosen by Jesus to accompany Him during His ministry, to learn from Him, follow His instructions and continue His work.

This Saturday, November 17, the Armenian Church celebrates two Holy Apostles, Andrew and Philip. Andrew was a Galilean fisherman and the first-called of the followers of Christ, along with his brother Simon, who was later called Peter. Philip was from Bethsaida and after he had been called to be an apostle he brought in Nathanael (later called Bartholomew).

Paregentan Of The Fast Of Advent
This Sunday, November 18, is the Eve (Paregentan) of the Fast of Advent (Hisnag). This is a week-long fast (Monday to Friday) leading up to the first Sunday of Advent, which is next Sunday.

Advent is the period that guides us to the birth and baptism of Christ. It begins fifty days before January 6. Advent is intended to be a solemn and quiet time for prayer, reflection, and meditation in preparation for the mystery of the incarnation.

Traditionally the entire fifty-day period of Advent was a period of fasting. Now there are three week-long fasts during Advent (along with the regular fasting days of Wednesday and Friday). The three week-long fasts are known as: The Fast of Advent (Hisnagats Bahk); The Fast of St. James (Sourp Hagopah Bahk); and the Fast of the Nativity (Dznuntyan Bahk).

Presentation Of The Holy Mother To The Temple
On Wednesday, November 21, the Armenian Church commemorates the Presentation of the Holy Mother to the Temple (Unsayoum Sourp Asdvadzadzini), one of the eight feast days devoted to Mary in the Armenian liturgical calendar. The doctrine of the Holy Mother as "Mother-of-God" (Asdvadzamayr) and Bearer-of-God (Asdvadzadzin) was established in the fifth century at the Holy Ecumenical Council of Ephesus.
