McPier Tax
President of Illinois State Senator John Cullerton proposed an expansion to the McPier tax that would pass on a 1% tax to our neighborhood's restaurants and bars to fund the re-development project intended for McCormick Place. Read full details of the proposed bill here.
Thank you to all who wrote letters to our State Reps, Alderman and Senator Cullerton regarding the McPier tax.
After much opposition from our community, Mayor Lightfoot has stated she does not support taxing neighborhood districts, especially those located who over 10 miles from McCormick Place. The bill is currently dead. We will continue to work with Alderman Tunney (who is opposed the tax) and State Representatives Sara Feigenholtz and Ann Williams to make sure that this bill does not come back in another form that will affect Lakeview.

Governor J.B. Pritzker's $45 billion package for transportation and other construction and developments was approved June 1st. He is expected to sign the bill. Both cigarette and gas taxes will increase to help raise money for the bill.
Gas taxes will increase from 19 cents per gallon to 38 cents per gallon (beginning in July). Cigarette taxes will increase as well from $1.98 per pack to $2.98 per pack. Both tax proposals are some of the highest in the country.
