Our Veterans Day Celebrated at Valleyview

On Monday November 12, 2018 the students and staff at Valleyview were honored to welcome five veterans to our school to speak to each grade level about their experiences during their service to our Nation. Among them was Alfred Sippel, a Navy Seal in WWII.  He was born 1927, raised in Denville, and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17.  He was in the 2nd wave to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day, serving a 4 year career which included underwater demolition. Additional guests included James Vialard and Bruce Patterson both of whom served in Vietnam, Michael Leyman, an active member of the Coast Guard Reserve and now a Denville Public School employee, and Joe Novak, a 3-year cryptologist in the Navy during Vietnam and a 32-year Navy Reservist, as well as a retired math and computer teacher, vice principal and principal of Valleyview Middle School, where he served his 40-year career in education. Students were presented with each of their stories of service and given the opportunity to prepare and ask questions
Small group sessions were held at each grade level, where selected students were given more time with each of them in a more intimate setting, where Mr. Sippel shared his collection of memorabilia and each of them shared additional experiences and thoughts on war, peace, and our Nation's current state of affairs. Guests were treated to lunch, generously provided by the Builders Club. Several students have reflected on this experience, one 8th grader stating: "As both of the Vietnam Veterans stated, they did not receive much thanks after returning from war. They were told not to wear their uniforms because in the 60's there was a lot of politics revolving around the Vietnam War. Just because these veterans did not receive praise back then does not mean that we should not do it now. Now more than ever we need to honor these courageous men; they have earned the respect of many and deserve some praise. Until today I did not realize what being a veteran meant, but now I know that with being a veteran you must make unimaginable sacrifices and choices."
This year Valleyview students and faculty collected food to provide Thanksgiving dinner for 45 Denville families. Boxes included stuffing, cranberry sauce,  pie fixings, and other Thanksgiving fare.  Along with the 45 boxes an additional 5 boxes of food were donated. Money was raised to purchase ShopRite gift cards and several turkeys were also donated.Great job Valleyview and Happy Thanksgiving
