Worship Series: "Kitchen Table Giving"
WORD for the Week for November 18, 2018
Twenty-Sixth Sunday After Pentecost

Worship Series: "Kitchen Table Giving"
Our fall stewardship theme is “Kitchen Table Giving.” It’s a metaphor symbolizing those times and places where deep conversations occur that shape our lives. From our calendar to our bills, from our work to our leisure, from our income to our philanthropic giving - all of these and other important topics often bear fruit over a table. Everyone is invited to pick up a Place Mat Packet! These place mats feature scripture, stories and essays, journal topics, discussion questions, and other interactive elements. It's yours to write or doodle on either on your own, with a friend, or in a LYFE Group. May it be a unique starting point for a deep conversation about how we steward God's resources as both individuals and as a church. Pick up yours in Carlson Hall, the Art Gallery, the Education Wing, Social Hall, or from your LYFE Group leader.

This week's place mat is also available for download:  http://haumc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Nov-18-Place-Mat.pdf

For November 4 - Matthew 6:20-24
For November 11 - Luke 16:1-13

COME & WORSHIP

Scripture Text:   Luke 6:31-38 (NRSV)

Worship Leader:  Rev. Dwight Haberman

Holy Communion : In Biblical studies there is a group of words that Jesus called the Hard Words. This lesson is not included, but the words are not so easy to live out. Should  we assume that it can happen if we depend on God’s Influence in our lives to live this way of life?

WORD for Sacred Journey 8:30am
Scripture Text:   Luke 6:31-38 (NRSV)

Stewardship IV,  How do we SPEND money?

The Story: Stephanie Escher

Reflection: It’s Communion and Commitment this week in Sacred Journey! Musical friend and guest James Schattauer joins us again to share original songs and old favorites like “Pennies from Heaven.” We will close our “Kitchen Table Giving” talks and make our commitment to support and move ministry forward. To help sharpen our perspective on giving as a spiritual practice, Stephanie Escher will share some of her recent experiences at the southern border and Mexico during The Story. Everyone is welcome!

Questions for reflection: As we prepare to make our financial commitment to ministry, consider:  what are you grateful for in the life of your church? What joy, grace, and growth would you like to see shared with others?

WORD for Traditional Worship 10am
Scripture Text: Luke 6:31-38 (NRSV)

Preaching:  Rev. Judy Zabel

Kitchen Table Giving: Spending and Investing

Thanksgiving and Commitment Sunday

Reflection: Who or what do you invest your money in? How do you decide? How is your giving invested or spent at Hennepin? What does Jesus say about investing and spending?  Please pray about your giving to Hennepin Avenue UMC and fill out your commitment card. Your generous giving will help us fund all the Hennepin ministries that are literally changing the world. If you did not receive one in the in the mail, there will be extra cards in the pews and at the Reception desk on Sunday.

For the Children and the Adults in Their Lives: This week, you're encouraged to use the discussion place mat (tap the link for the online version or pick up a place mat packet on campus) and read the story from Rob Bell about giving flowers to his wife. To Rob, giving a gift is great, but giving the gift of his heart is even better. Have you ever listened to a heartbeat through a stethoscope? You can hear that steady rhythm pumping blood through your body. When our hearts beat with God's, we send God's love streaming through the world. What is a gift you've given with your heart? Who gives to you with their heart? Who does God's heart beat for? Who is hurting and really needs to feel the love of God right now?
