NON PROFIT MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
Roots & Wings

Roots and Wings is a 501c3 organization that focuses on children and families in need. Currently, our focus is entirely based in Delray Beach. We have two major programs currently: the Above and Beyond Awards and Project Uplift.
The Above and Beyond Awards honors teachers and staff in all of the public schools in Delray Beach. Each teacher award bag consists of a plaque for their  wall or desk, a car magnet with signified that they are a "dedicated teacher", as well as an envelope containing two $50 bills, one for them to enjoy a meal and the other to help with supplies for the classroom.

Project Uplift's involves reading and reading comprehension in the public schools of Delray. We offer after-school programs for both second and third grade students who need and want help. We want to help them to pass the required FSA reading test at the end of the school year. Otherwise, they are retained for another year as a third grader. In addition to the organized program at Orchard View and Pine Grove, we gifted $5,000 to SD Spady to allow them to purchase an LLI reading kit. These kits allow for small group teaching by one teacher with only four students. This kit is used during the normal school day. Twice a year we will reward the students at both Pine Grove and Orchard View with certificates when they record improvement of their iReady tests.

For further information and to help in whatever way you can, contact Ted Hoskinson at [email protected] or by phone at 301/442-3463. Visit us on the web at http://www.rootsandwingsinc.org and follow us and like us on Facebook.

LEADERSHIP DELRAY
PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT:
Kellie Ames,
Program Manager
Downtown Development Authority

Meet Kellie Ames, a Leadership Delay participant and very active member of our community.   Recently we asked Kellie How would you like to deepen your contribution to your organization or your city?

Kellie says "When I moved here 3 years ago, I could tell immediately that Delray was a place I wanted to establish some roots. It was the first place that truly felt like home after moving from city to city for several years. Delray already looked to be a town that was moving forward in a great direction and I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of that change. I see so much potential in this Village by the Sea, and I work hard each day to help market and advertise what an amazing town we have-I want to continue to bring new ideas to help Delray grow while still preserving our small town charm."
When asked about her leadership legacy she spoke about " Teamwork : I believe that "teamwork makes the dreamwork" and with so many separate entities within Delray Beach, it can sometimes be hard to keep everyone working together as a unit. I think it's so important that Delray exudes a cohesive look and feel and adds to its value, so to me working with (and not just among) other teams is of utmost importance."
