Ganon Aleph Gets Ready for Thanksgiving
Ganon Aleph has been busy learning all about how the Pilgrims sailed from England and landed on Plymouth Rock so that they could daven in the way they chose. In class we talked about all the things the Pilgrims had to be thankful for when they arrived. Some of the things we came up with were that they survived the long trip on the Mayflower, when they landed the Native Americans were friendly and helpful, there were trees to build houses from, and they had many new and delicious foods to eat.
We had a wonderful time when we were entertained by some real Native Americans from Redhawk Native American Arts Council. We loved their colorful tribal costumes, and we learned some Native American songs and dances, too!

Glidah Truck Visits
Gan
Gimmel
The letter Gimmel came alive this week in Gan Aleph with a special visit from the glidah truck. Each child 'purchased' glidah in Hebrew from the truck and sat down to add their favorite toppings. A delicious time was had by all!

Lower School
Hurricane Helpers
In conjunction with the Third Grade Weather and Preparedness unit, "Saving Beachtown" has been an ongoing project in 3C centered around the problem of saving historic buildings in an imaginary city from future hurricane damage (i.e., storm surges and river flooding).
This week, structural, environmental, seawall and levee engineers teamed up and worked together to figure out how to cut costs and remain under budget by selecting the optimal number and variety of protective structures that were included in their initial plans.

Grade 4 Navi
Fourth grade students learned Perek Bet in Sefer Yehoshua. They learned about the spies going to Rachav's house. They made scenery of the perek using their own materials (and schools). They did a beautiful job!

Friendship Circle MVP
Yavneh Academy hosted our first Friendship Circle MVP program on Thursday, November 8th. The MVP training was offered to 6th graders and upon its completion, the participants are allowed to volunteer at Friendship Circle events. (The opportunity is traditionally only open to students in 7th grade and older.) School dismissed and close to 40 students had their favorite dinner, pizza and fries. And then the training began.
With so many volunteers, our students were divided into two groups. One was led by Rabbi Moshe Grossbaum, Director of the Bergen County Friendship Circle Chapter, and the second by Mrs. Chevee Szokovski, a Yavneh Academy parent and Friendship Circle coordinator. The program began with an introduction to how Friendship Circle works and information on how to help children with autism, cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome. The students participated in scenarios to help increase their awareness, The evening concluded with each participant creating a "sparkle globe" which will be given to FC members as they celebrate their birthdays.
Yavneh Academy and Friendship CIrcle will be celebrating Chanukah together on December 4th. Be on the lookout for more details.
Middle School Mishmar
One of the most successful and consistent activities in Middle School is our weekly mishmar for students in Grades 7 and 8. Every
Thursday
after school, close to 50 students voluntarily stay in school for an additional hour of learning followed by a pizza dinner. Rabbi Schreiber and Mr. Rossman lead the classes which touch on topics as diverse as Lifeboat Ethics, to interesting kashrut situations, to the moral dilemmas involved in watching bullfighting, to the Value of Time. Students spend time preparing sources and contributing their thoughts to the discussions which usually continue after the learning is completed. The sound of Torah in our halls after the last bell has rung is an important aspect of our students' growth and development as bnei and bnot Torah.
First Middle School Oneg of 5779!
Excitement and
ruach
filled the air during Yavneh's first Middle School
oneg
of the year. Students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades all participated in welcoming Shabbat and the new month of Kislev. Rabbi Penn gave a heartwarming D'var Torah about what it means to be a hero. In addition to eating delicious potato kugel, each student enjoyed dreidel shaped cookies in honor of the month of Kislev. With Mr. Steiner on guitar, the students sang several heart-warming tunes and Shabbat Z'mirot, and were especially excited about learning a new song, יה רבון , with Rabbi Menchel. It was a great way to start off the month of festivities and the monthly Middle School onegs.

The Yavneh Academy choirs will, once again, be performing between periods at the New Jersey
Devils Jewish Heritage Night,
taking place Monday night,
December 3
, the 2nd night of Chanukah.
Mrs. Motzen will be leading the chamber choir in singing the National Anthem on the ice before the game.

Annual Bergen County Chanukah Toy Drive
Yavneh Academy is, once again, participating in The 26th Annual Bergen County Chanukah Toy Drive. We are collecting new and unwrapped toys and gifts for children and young adults going through trying times.
Please drop off your donations in our bin
from now until November 21st. The Bergen County Toy Drive is a great collaborative
effort across many Bergen County Jewish schools and synagogues and donates to 18 different charity organizations. Your donations will help us share the excitement of Chanukah with thousands of children and young adults. This is a great opportunity to involve your children in the mitzvah of tzedakah!
Bring a gift to
