IN THIS ISSUE
If you would like to take part in Communion this weekend, please call 912-638-8683 to make an appointment. Thank you!

Rector's Ramblings

When I was a child, I had the sense that God was watching me all the time to make sure I was behaving. Sort of like Santa or the now-popular Elf on the Shelf, who keeps a tally of behavior to see who is naughty or nice. As I got older, I realized that wasn't really how I thought the relationship worked, and as an adult I realize that such a mindset is simply unhealthy for a mature faith. Instead, somewhere along the way, most of us develop a sense of doing what the right thing is because it's the right thing, not because someone (God, parent, government, etc.) is watching.

And yet. Sometimes we don't do what is best or right. Sometimes we do what we want without giving thought to the consequences. Sometimes we do what we want, knowing we act outside of what is expected of us. This is the realm of things done and left undone, intentionally or unintentionally. It's also the subject of a part of our Lenten journey. We have a need to be self-reflective and honest about what we do, and how what we do affects other people and other dynamics of the world around us. We also do well to consider how all of it relates to God.

Worship

Worship This Weekend
As we did last weekend, we will be livestreaming a 9:15 am Sunday eucharist on Facebook with staff-only participation. The March 29, 2020 service bulletin can be found here if you'd like to participate at home. The service will also be recorded and an email with the link will be sent out later in the week. (If you'd like to watch last week's March 22 worship service, it's available here.)

For those who would like to receive communion, please call the office to schedule a time for a private distribution (groups up to four persons at a time), following the Book of Common Prayer's "Communion Under Special Circumstances."
Please do not show up to church this weekend unless you have made a reservation for private distribution. We are not following our usual worship service pattern. You must schedule a time for communion. Again, do not show up without having made an appointment. CALL the office at 912-638-8683 to make an appointment as follows:

Saturday - St. Ignatius:
We will see small groups (up to four persons) from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.  You must CALL to reserve a time.

Sunday - Christ Church: We will see small groups (up to four persons) from 8:00 am - 11:00 am.  You must CALL to reserve a time.
Worship Music This Week
From the Organist and Choirmaster:

Greetings! This week the music team has taken advantage (5 at a time maximum) of recording hymns and musical offerings to have on hand should we be asked to shelter in place. In addition to our Anglican heritage we recorded favorites like Leaning On the Everlasting Arms, Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling, Blest Be the Tie that Binds and many more. In the next couple of days I'm going to record music on the organ. Any requests? Feel free to email me [email protected].

Living Lent, Meditations on these Forty Days by Barbara Cathorne Crafton (each meditation based on a line from a Lenten Hymn from the 1982 Hymnal). Church Publishing is making it available as a free offering. Barbara C. Crafton is an Episcopal priest, spiritual director, and author. She is the founder and head of the Geranium Farm, an online institute for the promotion of spiritual growth. She teaches in New York City at Marble Collegiate Church. Enjoy! You can find the meditations here.

Music This Week
XChurch will offer contemplative music including Taize, which are short er, more repetitive songs that are intended to be repeated several times in the hope that listeners will join in singing, too. Music offerings will be
Miserere mei, Deus (Have mercy upon me God) by American composer Arlen Clarke.

Sunday's Liturgy will offer  On Eagle's Wings  as the Opening Hymn and Hymn #304, and  I come with joy to meet my Lord   as the Closing Hymn. The Offertory Anthem is
How Can I Keep from Singing, arranged by English composer John Barnard. Music during Communion is Hymn #325, Let us break bread together. Sing with gusto!!!

Cum laude digma (with joyful voice),
Kathleen Turner

X Church will also be streamed live on the Christ Church Facebook page on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm. The bulletin for the March 25, 2020 service can be found here.
Worship in the Age of Social Distancing
Photo: Bobby Haven/Brunswick News

The health and safety restrictions that have been imposed because of the threat of the COVID-19 coronavirus affecting our community, have given birth to a number of creative strategies for how churches can stay in touch with their congregations. Fr. Tom was recently featured in an article in The Brunswick News that highlights the challenges ministers face in keeping their flocks together during a time of social distancing. Diocesan Decision Made to Suspend In-Person Worship Through Easter
This past Monday, Bishop Benhase wrote to the deacons and priests of the Diocese to offer new guidance based on information coming from the CDC and from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. He wrote, "as much as it grieves me to decide this, we need to cancel in-person worship for Holy Week and Easter," and added, "We still are on the upside of the curve and until we are on the downside, we must do this." Tour of Homes Cancelled for 2020
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the 2020 Tour of Homes was canceled this year. This action was taken to help safeguard the health and well-being of our ticket holders, volunteers and homeowners. We elected to follow the lead other large events are taking in our region due to the coronavirus.

All proceeds from the Tour go directly to area charities primarily benefiting women and children. Cancellation will impact many programs that depend on our event. We hope you will consider donating all or part of your ticket purchase.

To receive a full or partial refund, or to donate, please visit the Tour of Homes website here. If you purchased a ticket from a local retailer, we ask that you provide the location of the purchase, whether the purchase was made with cash or a check, and ask you provide us with your mailing address. If you have questions, please call 603-969-1047.

We look forward to seeing you March 20, 2021, for the 68th Tour of Homes.

Backpack Buddies Prevail!
From Susan Shipman:
Kudos for small teams packing! Over a 24 hour period, this collective of ace packers packed 708 food bags for distribution to disadvantaged students attending Oglethorpe, St. Simons, and Burroughs Molette elementary schools.  You all ROCK!!
Helping the Community in Times of Need
We invite all parishioners to support community relief efforts as they are able. We are doing the same from the church's perspective and will continue to do so. If you can help support St. Athanasius' food pantry, the needs are great and expected to grow. Donations may be left on the front porch of the Christ Church Parish House at any time, or the back porch at St. Ignatius on Saturdays, during Communion hours, and we will deliver the food to Brunswick.

Two local non-profits (there are others) that will be doing good works to address this current crisis include:

FaithWorks - many of you know FaithWorks and their many outreaches, from The Well, to Sparrows Nest and much more.  https://faithworksministry.org

Firebox - a relief organization here in Glynn County, started by the folks as Southern Soul to support restaurant workers in need. Many restaurant works are or will soon be out of work.  https://ssbbqfirebox.com/mission/

Life Keeps Moving Forward at Christ Church, Despite Social Distancing!
Even though we're apart from one another, the work of Christ Church continues. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Backpack Buddies team, children in Brunswick continue to receive their weekend meals. With regard to church improvements, the old Dodge Home has finally been demolished, new windows have been installed in the Christ Church Parish House and St. Ignatius is getting a beautiful new paint job. Meanwhile, the clergy and staff continue to meet, work and plan, (albeit remotely), to keep everything running a smoothly as possible. Thank you to all who are pitching in above and beyond the call of duty to BE the church, even when we can't actually be in the church!
