ErieCanalLunchtime Lecture: Veterans of Water and War
at the Erie Canal Museum
318 Erie Blvd. E. ( map)
Friday, November 16, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

In this special lunchtime lecture, historian Pamela Vittorio will discuss the impact that the end of the Civil War, World War I and the Canal era had on the lives of veterans. Many boatmen of the original Erie Canal joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War just as the Enlarged Erie Canal was being completed in 1862. Those who returned to the boats and banks of the canal found the culture had shifted; it was harsher and more difficult. Fast Forward to 1917: the Enlarged Canal closed its gates forever as the newly built Barge Canal System was about to open. Boatmen made their last trips in the fall of 1917, and many enlisted in the armed forces during World War I.

I81Downtown Syracuse Developers Rally In Support for the Community Grid
"Best solution to move people into the center of our city"

As the community continues to look forward to a recommendation from the New York State Department of Transportation regarding the future of the 1.4 stretch of Interstate 81 that runs through Downtown Syracuse, a group of 18 Syracuse developers - who all own property or stakes in Downtown Syracuse - are rallying for the Community Grid as the best option. In a recent Letter to the Editor, published earlier this week on Syracuse.com, the developers toted their support for The Grid, saying it is the best solution to "move people into the center of our city." They also spoke about the economic opportunity to increase jobs and create additional opportunities for property investments and generate new tax resources for the City of Syracuse.

RedhouseRedhouse Arts Center Hires Broadway Veteran as New Artistic Director
Hunter Foster will help bridge connections from Syracuse to NYC

The Redhouse Arts Center welcomes Broadway veteran Hunter Foster as its new artistic director. Hunter starts next month, and his first task is to work with executive director Samara Hannah to plan next year's season! Foster - who's been on Broadway for more than 20 years - has impressive accolades. He originated the role of Bobby Strong in "Urinetown," and earned a Tony Award nomination for his role in "Little Shop of Horrors." Foster knew he wanted the job as soon as he walked into the Redhouse's new space. He said the space will help him create "a Syracuse-to-NYC pipeline" to draw actors - including his connections - to Syracuse, but he wants the facility to continue to be open to local talent.

DensityTech Garden Plans Expansion for Anchor Tenant
Creating a hardware center to help Density with manufacturing

The Tech Garden, an incubator for startups and investors, is preparing to help its anchor tenant Density, reach its goals. Profiled earlier this week in a piece by NewsChannel9, Density makes anonymous data collectors to help count people. Although the company has received a variety of offers to leave for other areas, it chose to make its home in Syracuse because of the support it has received. Currently, Density's manufacturing facility is in Texas, but it plans to move to the Tech Garden by the end of the year, once a new hardware center in the garden complete. Eventually, the company plans to build a manufacturing facility in Central New York, and hopes to hire as many as 200 employees. The Tech Garden currently hosts 30 resident tenants, and hopes to expand out towards Harrison Street to make way for more entrepreneurs and start-ups!
