As part of the MA Civic Learning Coalition, Youth on Board worked with education activists all over the state to urge Massachusetts legislators to pass a statewide civics education bill. The bill, that was signed last week, is one of the most engaging and innovative in the country. By providing key education around how our government works and what citizens can do to engage civically, this program will ensure that current and incoming students in Massachusetts will be part of the next generation of informed & invested civic leaders. Bill highlights include:
Requires that all public schools teach American history and civics
Requires that all public schools provide students at middle and high schools with student-led civics projects!
Established a Civics Project Trust Fund which will be used to create a statewide infrastructure and PD to teachers prioritizing "economically disadvantaged students."
Includes provisions to encourage voter registration and other forms of civic engagement.
