Friday, November 16: Free screening by local filmmaker Hector Ortiz
United Against Hate event! Discussion with Supervisor Gioia.

I hope you'll join me Friday evening for a free screening of Announcement, a locally-produced short video about how the end of DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, impacts one family.

I'm honored to help lead a panel discussion after the film, which was made by local  filmmaker Hector Ortiz, a digital film graduate from Contra Contra Community College. Ortiz received a Richmond Arts Council grant to work on the film. He is a graduate of Pinole Valley High School.

A second short film,  The Perfect Immigrant, by another local filmmaker, Javier Lopez Quintana, will also be screened.

The event, called The Upstanding Immigrant, is part of Contra Costa County's
United Against Hate Week, November 11 - 18. I was proud to co-sponsor a resolution by the Board of Supervisors making this designation.

This week is part of a Bay Area effort to energize local communities to take action against hate in all kinds of grassroots ways from movie screenings to poetry readings to book discussions.  It started as a  response to white nationalists organizing rallies in the East Bay.

Sadly, the need to speak loudly against hate has grown over time with our President continuing his vile and untrue comments about immigrants. It's exciting and meaningful to mobilize with others to stand up against this.
