SAENGERBUND HOSTS VOCAL COMPETITION
On Sat., Jan. 25 the Houston Saengerbund will host its Fifth Annual Vocal Competition, the Saengerbund Awards. What began in 2016 as a regional contest for aspiring classical singers has grown to an international competition attracting applicants from every continent.

With its focus on German music, the Saengerbund Awards Competition is a unique opportunity for singers who excel in the German repertoire to be heard by music professionals from around the US who can offer guidance and potentially advance their solo careers. The prize money assists them in their musical preparation and is underwritten by the Houston Saengerbund and by individuals who love German vocal music and who believe in the mission of the competition.

Past winners have gone on to achieve significant success in leading companies including the Metropolitan Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera.  They have appeared in the summer programs of Wolf Trap, Glimmerglass, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and several have recently joined the companies of the Vienna Staatsoper and Opera Zuerich.

This year the Finals Concert and Awards will be presented at Cullen Hall at the University of St Thomas, on Jan. 25 at 4 pm. Admission is $5. Tickets may be purchased at Houstonsaengerbund.org

WEEKLY LAUGH
Russian immigrant went to the DMV to apply for a driver's license.
First, of course, he had to take an eye sight test.
The optician showed him a card with the letters

'C Z W I K N O S T A C Z.'

'Can you read this?' the optician asked.
'Read it?' the
Russian  guy replied, 'I know the guy.'
