The dinner menu will be short ribs, chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, salad and dessert. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Make reservations by June 10 by calling Dorothy Whitman at 410-867-4731 or emailing her at dewhitman@verizon.net .

The dinner speaker will be Dr. Randolph George, author of the book, “Memoir of a Skipjack.”

Skipjacks are a window into the heritage of the Chesapeake. Skipjacks remind us of an age when a robust oyster industry enabled a unique way of life along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. These graceful boats take us back to the waterside hamlets where sturdy folk built and tended the vessels of a fishing industry now nearly faded from view. In 1993, Dr. George found an aging skipjack named Martha Lewis , and what followed became a labor of love and a discovery of the histories, places, and people that deeply connected a bygone era.

Dr. George will describe what makes a Chesapeake Bay skipjack and explain what made these vessels unique to the Chesapeake region. He will also discuss methods of design and construction of the Skipjacks Wilma Lee and the Martha Lewis , and reasons why these iconic vessels and their stories should be preserved. The current status of skipjacks on the Bay and the future of these traditional commercial vessels will also be included.

AASLH Workshop: Reinventing the Historic House Museum
What: Reinventing the Historic House Museum is a one-day, in-person workshop.
When: June 28, 2019, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Where:   Dumbarton House, 2715 Q St NW, Washington, DC 20007

Join the American Association for State and Local History
in Washington, DC for a one-day, in-person workshop dedicated to reinventing the historic house museum.
This workshop includes an analysis of the most important opportunities and threats facing historic sites in America based on the latest social and economic research, with a discussion on how they may relate to the participants’ house museum. Instructors will share a series of field-tested tools and techniques drawn from such wide-ranging sources as non-profit management, business strategy, and software development.
Drawing from innovative organizations, we profile historic sites that are using new models to engage with their communities to become more relevant, are adopting creative forms of interpretation and programming, and earning income to become more financially sustainable. A key component of the workshop is a facilitated brainstorming session to reinvent an event or program. Working with an actual house museum not only puts theory into practice but demonstrates the value of multiple perspectives for analysis.
