Message from Member at Large, Fred Tugas
Greetings SACSA Family!
It's June, which is a time of reflection and planning for many of us. As we wrap up end-of-year reports and assessment, take a moment to reflect on your successes and challenges this year. Was there an innovative initiative that happened on your campus? Perhaps a new collaboration that worked well? Discovered noteworthy information through new research or assessment?
This is that time of year where we encourage you to consider sharing your knowledge, experience, and best practices with others at this year's annual conference! Call for programs and posters are due this month and we hope you encourage others on your campus and elsewhere to join us in Raleigh as we connect theory, practice, and purpose.
As the Executive Council takes the summer to reflect and plan for the Association's future, we have a small group working to examine our governing documents and propose changes that will help us realize our vision of becoming the preeminent generalist organization in the profession. The proposal seeks to advance our membership by ensuring we are inclusive and forward-thinking in pursuit of the mission of student affairs and higher education.
We hope to complete our proposal soon for review and approval. In the meantime, if you have questions or comments on how we can improve SACSA, please don't hesitate to reach me at [email protected].
SACSA would not be possible its active volunteers. This month, I encourage everyone to reflect on how you hope to engage with the Association this next academic year. No matter how big or small, members of Executive Council are connect you across the Association to reach your professional goals.

Marc Ebelhar
SACSA Member since 2014 |
Marc Ebelhar, a SACSA member since 2014, serves as Assistant Director of Residential Operations for Georgia State University Housing. His first and favorite SACSA conference was in Louisville, Kentucky in 2014. He cites Louisville as his favorite conference location because SACSA visited his alma mater, Bellarmine University, for the opening session!
Marc received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Bellarmine University, an M.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs at the University of South Carolina, and is currently enrolled in the Ed.D. in Student Affairs Leadership program at the University of Georgia. He credits
two of his mentors, Dr. Fred Rhodes and Dr. Bill McDonald, with sparking an interest in SACSA for him.
Within SACSA, Marc has presented at the Graduate Student Symposium in 2014 and 2016, attended Mid-Manager's Institute (MMI) in 2016, and participated in a panel discussion about MMI at SACSA 2016.
On why he stays involved in SACSA, Marc says "SACSA's core values of inclusiveness, professionalism, and collegiality are not just words stated on the website or spoken of at an opening or closing session, it is evident in the inner-workings and interactions with the entire association." He particularly enjoys the chance to meet new colleagues and create new memories at each different SACSA.
When not doing homework, he enjoys playing board games and attending board gaming conventions a few times a year. He attends a convention over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta each year, which is a celebration of things such as pop culture, science fiction, robots, puppetry, superheroes, and so much more. In the parade at this convention each year, he participates as part of the periodic table of the elements group. Last year, he had the element Californium, which is the picture you see here!

SACSA Conference Call for Proposals
Conference Committee
SACSA encourages the submission of innovative and engaging program proposals for the 2019 Annual Conference scheduled for Saturday, November 2 - Monday, November 4 in Raleigh, NC. Our theme for 2019 is Connecting Theory, Practice and Purpose.
Faculty, practitioners and graduate students are invited to share innovative solutions, new research, and current trends addressing best practices in collaboration, partnerships and experiential learning related to one or more the following topics:
· Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
· Mental Health
· Accessibility
· Research and Assessment
· Mentorship
· Academic Partnerships
SACSA program proposals will be accepted in the following formats:
Concurrent Sessions - A traditional 50-minute breakout session. Presenters are encouraged to use creative and engaging techniques to interact with the audience.
Lightning Round Sessions - 3 presenters from various institutions or departments within the same institution will present on a common theme (i.e. initiatives addressing gender issues on campus, best practices implementing Title IX, etc.). Presenters will have 10-minutes of presentation time, sharing how they address the common theme in their department/position and/or at their institution. Following the third presenter there will be 10-minutes for Q&A with all presenters. It is encouraged for you to connect with colleagues across and outside the region to submit a joint proposal. You may also submit individually for a Lightning Round option and the conference committee will match proposals accordingly.
Poster Session - Presenters will utilize graphs, diagrams, pictures, data, handouts, and narrative text to form an exhibit of either completed or in progress research. *The Poster Session will take place in conjunction with the Involvement Fair during the conference.

Submitting a Proposal
1. To submit your proposal, CLICK HERE or go to https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/User/Login?ReturnUrl=%2FSACSA2019
2. Register if you have never logged in to the CMT system OR login with your username and password.
3. Select "Conferences" in the top right corner and search for "SACSA."
4. Select "SACSA 2019 Annual Conference."
5. Select "Create New Submission" in the top left corner.
6. Complete the program proposal submission form.
