Series:   "Belonging"
Sermon :   "Acceptance: What It Is and Maybe What It Isn't "
Scripture :  Hebrews 10:19-25

This Sunday
We toss around words like "being accepting," or being "open and accepting" as though it is something clearly understood.  I'm not so sure it is.  And what if it isn't...clearly understood, that is.  It begs the question, would we really accept everyone no matter what?  Would we really feel comfortable enough to sit next to someone we know is an "enemy," or someone really strange, or who talks to themselves?  Would we accept someone we know to be a sexual predator or someone with a history of violent mental illness?  I'm not so sure, and I'm not so sure that's a bad thing.  I get that this is another tough topic, but it too is vitally important as we continue down this road of exploring what it means to be a place of belonging.  I mean, seriously, how far are we really willing to take it?  Are we willing to become something completely different, changed from what we already are? Have we really thought through what this means, or could mean?   For a whole lot of churches, the idea of saying that all are welcome is the foundation for the hope that in offering a welcoming environment, what will follow is that those coming in will receive a God-filled transformation, the realization that they are not whole without Jesus; that Christ can take what they are right now and make them more; more fulfilled, more joyous, more...(fill in the blank).  It begs the question, do we have an expectation that those coming will have some kind of transformation?  If so, what?  So this Sunday we'll explore it, and I hope to explore it in some creative ways.  To prepare please read Hebrews 10:19-25.

Rev. Laura Baumgartner

I visited Lazy F for the first time ever last weekend. I know that must seem crazy to some of you, but I had never been before. I got to see the cross way up on the hill, marvel at the new dining hall, meet Sam and Mazy, the dogs, and give thanks for the beauty of the place. I now understand a little more about what so many of you have told me about what a unique and hopeful place Lazy F is and the many ways that you all have intertwined history with that place. However I wasn't there just to investigate.

Church Work Party
December 1
Please join us on Saturday, December 1 between 8:30am-noon to work around the church doing outdoor tasks like, raking leaves, pulling weeds, pruning bushes, etc. We have a beautiful property and it takes many hands to keep it tidy and looking its best. If you can help, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Ted Snyder (425-747-4653). Remember to bring your gardening gloves and tools, even a wheel barrow, and dress for the weather.
Advent Worship Series Begins December 2:
Prepare the Way
This Advent, as we prepare for Christmas, we also Prepare the Way for God's re-entry into our time and place at Christmas. We'll have images of feet on roads of various kinds throughout the season as we think about what "way" we are going. We'll consider what "way" God is preparing for us, how we are preparing the "way" for God, and if the characters from Jesus' life like Mary, John the Baptist, and the Visitors at the manger can teach us something about preparing for the arrival of Jesus in our midst. Plan to be part of Advent at Aldersgate in worship, in decorating, in sharing, in baking, in crafting, and in your own ways too. It's a time of year when we can all gather and wait and watch and prepare together.
Preparing for Advent
Advent is coming soon and the Banner and Flower Committees are making lists! How can YOU help?

Poinsettias - Please donate money to buy a poinsettia to decorate the church in December.  A large plant costs $30, and a small plant costs $15. Signup on Sunday's attendance form and include a dedication to appear in the bulletin December 16. Please pay promptly!  Make your check out to AUMC and put "POINSETTIAS" in the memo field. You can take your plant home after church on Sunday, December 23.

Volunteers - We will decorate the sanctuary and narthex on Friday, November 30 beginning at 9:00am. We need many hands and strong backs to help! If you can help, contact Norma Line ( [email protected] )

Creche [Nativity] Sets - A big hit a few years ago, we will display your special creche sets in the narthex for two Sundays in December. There will be more information later on about delivery dates, etc.

Variegated Holly - The Flower Committee hopes to use lots of greens and holly this year to decorate the church. If you are willing to donate holly, please contact Norma (see email above). Allergy problems? Let us know.

The Children and Youth Christmas pageant is fast approaching.  Please let Jen Hoerber know if your children or youth would like to participate and in what capacity.  Practices will be during Kid's Club the next few weeks and the kids are already singing the carols in Music Time.  This is an easy going show and we hope to have all the kids participate in whatever way they feel comfortable.
Pampered Chef Update
A big thank you to everyone who ordered from the Pampered Chef Fundraiser party. We have reached the start of peak shipping season. Malia Hampson hopes that your order will arrive and be available at church on November 25. Orders will not arrive prior to Thanksgiving. Malia thanks you for your patience and support.

Crossroads Community Dinners
Aldersgate is hosting two community dinners this month, one the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and one the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Your help is needed and appreciated for either or both. Here are all the details about both events.

Tuesday, November 20 at Crossroads Community Center at 6:00pm
Organizer: Tom Breske and the youth
This is the annual Thanksgiving Dinner organized by Aldersgate volunteers.  About 300 people from the community come and enjoy a festive dinner. For most who have volunteered to help cook, serve, or clean-up for this event, arrive between 5:30-5:45. For a few of you, Tom will be in touch with you about when to arrive and what you'll be doing. What we still need for this event is people to show up, sit at tables with others who come, eat, and enjoy. If parking at the Community Center is full, Community Center staff will be distributing parking permits to park at Crossroads Mall. Do not park at the Mall without a permit or your car may be towed.

Tuesday November 27 at The Salvation Army at 5:30pm
Organizer: David Maybe
This is the monthly chicken dinner organized by Aldersgate volunteers (4th Tuesday of every month.) About 50 hungry people come for dinner.  We need more people NOW to provide food and to serve dinner on November 27. If you can help, sign up here.   For those who have volunteered to bring food for this event, please have your donation to Aldersgate by  4:00pm Know that your donation will be very appreciated by those we feed
Christmas Giving Opportunities
  • Vision House is a non-profit based in Renton that provides dozens of homeless women and children with a place to live, child care, education, and support while becoming self sufficient.  Your donations of gift cards for groceries, clothing, gasoline and personal items for $10 to $50 are a great help for these women during the year. These will be available in the narthex for you to choose. Please return your gift cards by Sunday December 16.
  • Please donate items to the Hopelink Christmas Gift Store which provides gifts for needy children from infants to 18 year olds. Aldersgate focuses on teenagers because gifts for them are often in short supply such as warm clothing, gift cards, makeup, sports equipment, movie cards. A donation box will be in the narthex Nov. 25. Deadline is Sunday Dec. 16.
