 NATIVI TY CONNECT
November 15, 2018
26th Sunday after Pentecost
9:30 am
November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ's coming again. So the readings today tell of the final resurrection and the end time. In the turmoil of hope, fear, and disbelief that these predictions provoke in us, Hebrews sounds a note of confident trust. Christ makes a way for us where there is no way, and we walk it confidently, our hearts and bodies washed in baptismal water, trusting the one who has promised. The more we see the last day approaching, the more important it is to meet together to provoke one another to love
.
We are headed for home in our fall sermon series " Questions from the Gospel"...only this Sunday and next before the end of the church year.  Sometimes Jesus asks the questions...thank God the Answer is always readily available as well.
2019 Stewardship Season

We are in the midst of our 3 Sunday emphasis on Stewardship.  Our chairperson, Joe Mattis leads us once again in our annual season of commitment to Nativity for our time, talent and treasure in 2019.  Our session concludes on November 25th, when we return our giving intentions on Christ the King Sunday.  If you did not receive your packet last Sunday make sure to pick yours up in the narthex this Sunday.

"God loveth a cheerful giver."
Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting This Sunday
We are ready for our Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday. Running concurrent with fellowship in the Hall following worship, ee will go over our spending plan for 2019 and will be presenting an update on our stewardship campaign.  We'll spend a bit of time on other items including building issues and leadership profile... but the bulk of our energy will be spent talking about consolidation with Messiah and the presentation of our upcoming resolution.  You'll not want to miss this twice a year forum on our ministry together!

Consolidation

Vote

Sunday, December 2nd will not only find you at Nativity beginning a new season of Advent and the new church year,  but also in the Fellowship Hall following worship for a Special Congregational Meeting.  There will be 1 agenda item...a resolution for consolidation of Nativity LC and Messiah LC.  Both congregations will be voting that morning with the results revealed in a special Connect that afternoon.

Needless to say this rendering is the result of years of effort and a task force that has devoted months to the proposition...so your voice will be heard (in actuality will be a secret ballot) that day with an echo into the future!
Nativity's Christmas Party
Sandi Kottman will host Nativity's Christmas Gathering at her home on December 8th starting at 6:00pm.   Sandi refers to the gathering as a finger-food dinner party of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres with dessert.

Please RSVP no later than November 30th via email, text or phone call. Sandi's email is sandimack1212@ gmail.com. and phone numbers are listed in the Nativity directory.
Sunday's Givers
This Sunday we recognize the Barron family for providing candles and flowers in celebration of Tim's birthday. Barb Gigure offers a delicious fellowship hour following worship...we are grateful for all who every Sunday fill our hearts with their generosity!
Flowers, Candles and Fellowship
We are happy to say we are fully subscribed for candles and floral arrangements through the end of the year!   Coffee hour fellowship needs a host for Sundays December 23rd and 30th...please sign up in the narthex.  On Christmas Eve we are asking if you can bring a plate of Christmas cookies to be shared following worship that evening...some who come will be going home to an empty house and we would love to provide a bit of cheer for all who care to linger.

Sign up sheets for 2019 Fellowship, flowers and candles will be available in December...make plans to grab your Sunday of choice!
UCM  Notes...
The UCM Food Pantry always has need for heart healthy food items. Some of the items that are always needed  Include-
-canned tuna (or other meats) in water
      -whole wheat pasta
      -low salt canned goods
      -low sugar cereals
      -canned beans or dry beans
-olive oil or canola oil for cooking
      unsalted nuts and seeds

Our carts need to be replenished...when you're shopping for Thanksgiving fill a bag (see above) with items that are crucial to feeding the hundreds who weekly count on UCM for proper nourishment!  Simply drop off your donation in the narthex.  Thank you!

On behalf of their patrons UCM expresses thanks to those who contributed recently delivered much appreciated winter wear.

UCM is in the process of stocking their holiday gift room which provides toys and gifts for children this season. Please be aware of the colorful large box in the narthex that awaits your contribution...take note of the information sheet there that will walk you through your purchasing process.  Sunday, December 9th is your final giving opportunity for this annual event.

We will also once again be breaking out our beloved Chrismitt Tree...simply purchase a pair of children's gloves or hat and clip it to the tree.  This offering will be available through Christmas Eve.
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
- Romans 8:38-39

Dear friends,

As I write you this, several wildfires are raging across California. Already more than 30 people have died and more than 200 are missing, while hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes under evacuation orders.

I'm writing to ask you to give today to help people whose lives have been impacted by the wildfires in California. The road to recovery will be long, but we have an opportunity to accompany survivors and let them know they are not alone.

Through our partners in California, Lutheran Disaster Response has already begun addressing immediate needs, including providing food and other necessities to survivors. We are also preparing to address long-term needs which might include rebuilding of structures and emotional and spiritual care. The need will be great.

With gratitude for your partnership in ministry,

The Rev. Daniel Rift

The Last Word...
You probably didn't need to be reminded, but in case you do I'll share that today, November 15th, is Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. There is no evidence available to explain why this day came to be or who originated and organized it...but most likely it's a good time to celebrate it. This isn't exactly a "fun" holiday, but if your refrigerator is like the one here at church...let's just say that this week Marianne and I will observe the day on behalf of the many that call Nativity's refrigerator their own!

The refrigerator is possibly one of the most neglected pieces of equipment in many households...unlike the others it can be a source of the most danger when you use it the least. Foods seem to find their way to its inner recesses never to see the light of day again. Spills are never properly cleaned and jars of grandma's pickles compete for space with weeks old carryout. Do you notice an odd smell when you open the door? It's a cry for help. Let's just say that the expiration dates on food items are not meant to be a suggestion. Take it (or throw it) for what it's worth...and nothing is worth getting sick over! If you're ultra frugal, have a fridge party and eat everything still good all at once. Then don a pair of gloves and take the day to scrub yours clean...and start over.

This day could also serve as a metaphor for life. What's in your proverbial refrigerator...what's chilling in your mind or heart that is outdated and potentially hazardous to your spiritual health? Do you harbor ideas or feelings that are past their prime...do you reserve a space for fodder that is outdated and dodgy? Do you get lazy with the accumulation of stuff that you know will never be useful? I could take more of your time to assemble a list of what I'm talking about, except I think you already know. This isn't a call for rearranging...it's a plea for disposal and cleansing.

Then you can begin again. It might be a little more costly...but it will be fresh, appetizing, and worth it in the end. The stink of decay, the mold that takes over, fermenting prejudice, anger, and holding on beyond the use by date can vanish and be replaced with crisp, aromatic, juicy, and delicious. And if anyone else opens your "fridge", they will be welcomed and invited in instead of becoming nauseated and revolted!

Out with the old with a week to spare...new stuff is coming! Specifically, you will be prepared for Thanksgiving...not just what is stored before the feast, also that which is leftover. And if you're like me (not something anyone should wish) you know that oft times those blessings are even better than the day they were served!

Happy Housekeeping...and Happy Thanksgiving!!
