The original thanksgiving celebration was held by the Pilgrim settlers in Massachusetts during their second winter in America in December, 1621. The first winter had killed 44 of the original 102 colonists.

Experience Joy By Giving Thanks

Do you want to experience joy? Do you want to experience sense of pleasure and happiness? The way to experience these things is easily overlooked. It’s a trail often covered by the weeds of materialism, the lust of success, and a lack of awareness. You might be overlooking the key to having joy—even though it’s right there under your nose.

What is this hidden way to experience joy? By being thankful. Giving thanks. Not seeing what’s wrong, but rather celebrating all that is right. Being thankful and counting your blessings, practicing thankfulness every day is the surest way to experiencing joy.

Mission Bazaar Raises Over $2,000 dollars

Renee Jefferson helped coordinate the Bazaar.

There isn't an official accounting yet, but money raised from the TLC Mission Bazaar totaled over $2,000 dollars. Proceeds from the Bazaar benefited TLC's Early Learning Center, receiving 90% of the total, and Bloomington's Oasis for Youth collecting 10%.

Through the sales of raffle tickets, participants had a chance to win a beautiful handmade quilt by Holly Porter. Her granddaughter, Madeline, drew the winner's name, Lois Nornes, on the final day of the sale last Sunday.

Unsold children's books were being made available to Westwood Elementary school and their Reading Buddies program. Thanks to Louis Olson for arranging a gift from Thrivent Financial paying for the cookie-making materials used by TLC's Club 56 to bake cookies, also being sold this past Sunday.

As I write you this, several wildfires are raging across California. Already [63] people have died and [600] are missing, while hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes under evacuation orders.

I’m writing to ask you to give today to help people whose lives have been impacted by the wildfires in California. The road to recovery will be long, but we have an opportunity to accompany survivors and let them know they are not alone.

Through our partners in California, Lutheran Disaster Response has already begun addressing immediate needs, including providing food and other necessities to survivors. We are also preparing to address long-term needs which might include rebuilding of structures and emotional and spiritual care. The need will be great.

CHOIR NIGHT QUICKIE DISH

- The size of this casserole determines the amount of vegetables needed-

Sliced Potatoes

Salt & Pepper

Sliced Carrots

Sliced Onions

1 or 2 Cans Condensed Tomato Soup

1 lb. Ground Beef (browned)

1 Can Mushrooms

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Place layer of potatoes in bottom of a casserole dish, salt and pepper.

Add layer of carrots, salt and pepper, then layer of onions.

Top with ground beef.

Pour soup (undiluted) over top, add mushrooms plus mushroom liquid.

Bake uncovered in 350 degree oven for 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours.

The sounds of bells, angels, and mystery abound as the National Lutheran Choir captivates with the annual Christmas Festival , December 7 & 8. A family-favorite celebration of the Holidays for more than three decades, the Christmas Festival is the Choir’s signature program of poetry, communal singing, and exquisite music over three performances at the awe-inspiring Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Bring to TLC Collection Box in the Narthex

Native people make up a disproportionate number of the homeless population in Minneapolis. Causes of homelessness are related to economics, domestic violence, addiction, mental illness, and many other causes. Today, many people have joined together to create a safe encampment near the Franklin/Hiawatha corridor in Minneapolis. This community is comprised primarily of Native people, many with significant housing challenges.

We are now entering the winter season. Outdoor conditions range from cold to dangerously frigid. Blankets and sleeping bags remain a high priority. TLC members and friends can help keep the homeless warm in this tent community with donated blankets and sleeping bags. There will be a collection box in TLC's Narthex this Sunday. Any size clean blanket or sleeping bag is appreciated. TLC's Women's Cafe Group will be delivering your gifts to the resource facility responsible for distributing to the encampment.

November Mission of the Month:

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) was founded in 1987, and is a Christian non-profit that provides nutritionally complete meals specifically formulated for malnourished children in over 70 countries throughout the world. TLC has supported FMSC efforts over the last several years through benevolence in giving and volunteering.

FMSC offers volunteers a one-of-a-kind experience. You’ll hand-pack rice, soy, dried vegetables and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets and shipped to our incredible partners, working hard to reach the neediest children around the world.

Two packing sessions are scheduled in November at the Eagan site: 990 Lone Oak Rd #136, Eagan, MN 55121 . The first is Tuesday, Nov. 20, Noon to 2:00pm and the second packing session is Wednesday, Nov. 28, 9:30 to 11:30am . To carpool meet at TLC a half hour before. Mall of America 5k Walk to End Hunger

The Walk to End Hunger is a family-friendly 5K fun walk presented by The Mosaic Company in partnership with VEAP and others. Held on Thanksgiving morning in the Mall of America, it's a meaningful way to be 'thankful' with family or friends - giving back before you give thanks!

It's especially important to start off cold winter mornings with a good breakfast. Consider helping fill the VEAP box with hot cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, Bisquick, canned fruit, muffin mix, cocoa mix and juices. Did you know that your donation of $50 to VEAP will purchase $500 worth of food for families in our community!

Pastor Ed is leading an 11-day tour of Italy and Germany the summer of 2020. Sites include Rome, Assisi, Florence, Venice, Salzburg, and Munich. The trip concludes in Oberammergau, Germany, to see the longest running theatrical production in the world--the Passion Play at Oberammergau. This is a rare opportunity to see an amazing and powerful spectacle.

THE ORIGINAL THANKSGIVING

Continued from the E-Transmissions Header--

At one point their daily food ration was down to five kernels of corn apiece, but then an unexpected trading vessel arrived, swapping them beaver pelts for grain, providing for their severe need. The next summer’s crop brought hope, and Governor William Bradford decreed that December 13, 1621, be set aside as a day of feasting and prayer to show the gratitude of the colonists that they were still alive.

These Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom and opportunity in America, gave thanks for God's provisions in helping them find 20 acres of cleared land; for the fact that there were no hostile Indians in that area; for their newfound religious freedom, and for God’s provision of an Indian interpreter named Squanto. Along with the feasting and games involving the colonists and more than 80 friendly Wampanoag Indians (who added to the feast by bringing wild turkeys and venison), prayers, sermons, and songs of praise were important in the celebration. Three days were spent in feasting and prayer.
