Week ending November 09, 2018
NOVEMBER 14 is GIS DAY!
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a technology that helps people solve problems and make better decisions by thinking and planning geographically. The City of Encinitas uses GIS in many ways every day across many departments. For GIS Day this year we would like to remind everyone that the City has GIS focused maps for the public to use too, such as SeeClickFix and My Encinitas. New GIS mapping tools are coming soon to search for permits as well; stay tuned for upcoming announcements on this upcoming new feature. Try out these two online maps now:

Fire Weather Preparedness. The National Weather Service has extended the Red Flag Warning for San Diego County until Wednesday, November 14 at 5pm. During a Red Flag Warning, extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire.

What You Can Do
  • Mow before 10 a.m., but never when it's windy or excessively dry. Lawn mowers are designed to mow lawns, not weeds or dry grass.
  • Metal blades striking rocks can create sparks and start fires.
  • In wildland areas, spark arresters are required on all portable gasoline-powered equipment. This includes tractors, harvesters, chainsaws, weed eaters and mowers.
  • Residents should make sure they have 100 feet of defensible space around structures.
  • Remove leaves and needles from gutters.
  • Never pull a vehicle over in dry grass.

2018 Encinitas Holiday Parade presented by California Coast Credit Union

Saturday, December 1, 2018 5 p.m. Tree-lighting, 5:30 p.m. Parade Start

For the 61st year, Encinitas will kick off the holiday season at the 2018 Encinitas Holiday Parade- presented by California Coast Credit Union on Saturday, December 1.  Thousands of people will be on floats, on foot, in cars, and marching in bands while tens of thousands cheer them along the Parade route along Coast Highway  101.

Many of our nearly 100 parade entries aim to win a prize in one of the Parade's judged categories for lights, creativity, performance, music, spirit and overall impression.

Parade spectators will be able to claim a good spot to watch the parade as soon as Coast Highway closes at 4 p.m.  Followed by a countdown and ceremonial tree lighting, Santa himself will make a brief appearance to kick things off at 5 p.m. at the Lumberyard shops courtyard (near Starbucks).  The Parade starts promptly at 5:30 p.m.

The 2018 parade theme is "Botanical Oasis".  Encinitas has a deep history of flower growing, a terrific climate for growing a wide variety of beautiful and interesting plants and even boasts a world-class botanic garden.  This year's Parade theme ties in perfectly with the Holiday Parade Committee's selection of Julian Duval as the 2018 Parade Grand Marshal.  Julian is retiring in January after 24 years of leadership as President and CEO of the San Diego Botanic Garden.

Take advantage of our FREE parking shuttles that run from San Dieguito Academy High School (parking lot located on the corner of Melba Road and Nardo Road) or from the YMCA/Ecke Sports Park parking lot on Saxony Road. Both shuttles run from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. ADA accessible busses run from the San Dieguito Academy location. Shuttles run approximately every 20 minutes and will drop you off at the NCTD bus station on Vulcan Avenue, just a half block from the Parade route.
