6th Grade Visit to the Mexican Cultural Institute
|
Today, the 6th grade class visited the Mexican Cultural Institute with
Art teacher Mrs. Luisa Vargas and Spanish teacher Sra. Vicky Masson. This co-curricular field trip offered students a more in-depth look at
Dia de los Muertos ("The Day of the Dead"), a traditional Mexican celebration of those loved ones that have passed on before us. They have been learning about this celebration in Spanish and will soon begin working on art inspired by what they saw today.

A Message from the Head of School:
Dear CES Families,
I cannot believe that the weather forecast is predicting sleet for tomorrow! And, it is so beautiful outside right now. But, that is the way it goes. In preparation for a possible delayed opening, the administrative team has discussed the possibility of trying out our new student information system to get an email to you. IF we need to do that, we will not use Constant Contact. We will use the email addresses that are in the school's database, and that you have had an opportunity to verify for accuracy. We will also put a notice on the home page of our web site and we will contact the local television and radio stations. Remember, CES follows the call of Montgomery County Public Schools. If you hear that MCPS is delayed, you can assume that CES will have the same delay. Here is a portion of the wording from our Handbook regarding school closings and delays:
CES follows the Montgomery County Public Schools regarding weather related late openings and closings and evening activities. If Montgomery County Public Schools are closed, CES is closed.
If Montgomery County Public Schools open
two hours late:
- CES will have no Early Morning Care.
- Full-Day PreK - Gr. 8 drop-off will begin at 9:35am, with classes beginning at 9:50am. Half-day PreK classes will be cancelled.
- Full-Day Preschool 2's and 3's drop-off will begin at 10:00am, with classes beginning at 10:15am. Classes will be cancelled for students who attend the half-day program.
- If CES has a half day (early dismissal) and the Montgomery County Public Schools open two hours late, there will be no school.
I am looking forward to meeting all the grandparents and special friends who will be here next Tuesday. To me, Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day is the kick-off for the holiday season. It brings me such joy to see how happy your children are to have their special family members with them at school. If you have not sent in an RSVP yet, please do so right away.
I hope that each and every one of you has a happy Thanksgiving holiday. I will be enjoying my grandbaby's first Thanksgiving with her. She is taking her first airplane trip to see her C.C. and GrandBob. I can hardly wait!
With love and gratitude,

7th Grade Field Trip
to
the
Hirshhorn National Museum
of Modern Art
The seventh grade visited the Hirshhorn Museum on Tuesday, November 13th to view Mark Bradford's
Pickett's Charge
, a series of eight monumental paintings (each more than 45 feet long) inspired by the cyclorama painting in Gettysburg by Paul Philippoteaux. This was an interdisciplinary field trip led by history teacher Susan Scola and art teacher Luisa Vargas and a unique opportunity to view original works as a rich learning experience.
The class visited Gettysburg National Military Park ten days before going to the Hirshhorn. In Gettysburg, students viewed the Philippoteaux work, a 377 foot painting of Pickett's Charge, and experienced the sound and light show that explains this portion of the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point of the Civil War. Bradford's work is more abstract than Philippoteaux's and invited students to look carefully to discover significance in the artist's message and to be inspired to create art of their own.
The class compared and contrasted the work of the two artists and also the individual panels of Bradford's paintings, considering history, elements of art (particularly color and texture), and choices the artist made. How did the artist respond to this event? What is my reaction to these pieces? What relevance does this art have today? Spending time in front of the art, looking carefully, and responding to questions by the teachers gave the students the chance to think critically and contemplate meaning, as well as consider what each will create in the art studio.

Rise Against Hunger - 11/17/2018
Our annual Rise Against Hunger event will take place in the Parish Dining Room on
Saturday, November 17th from 10:00am - 12:30pm. Plan to arrive a little early to get registered and settled in for this great event!
Our Rise Against Hunger event has been a fantastic expression of outreach within our church each year. We typically have about 60 people show up and package more than 15,000 meals in the two-hour period, and the group represents a great cross-section of church parishioners.
Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world's most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030, and the meals we packed last year were sent to Madagascar. We hope to see everyone there this year!
For more information, see the bulletin insert, or e-mail David Craig at
david@spacesaverVA.com.
A suggested donation to the Outreach general budget is: $50 per family, $25 per adult and $15 for youths 16 and older who participate on their own.
