The Connector
April-June 2019
OhioMeansJobs Lorain County kicked off our new Professionals' Networking Roundtable (PNR) on April 3, 2019. The PNR group is facilitated by OMJLC staff members, David James, Steve Heugel, and Winfred Robinson III. Within the first three sessions the group has grown to 12 very engaged professionals who are looking to the PNR for support, coaching, troubleshooting strategies, and of course, networking opportunities.

Mark Gonska, VP of Dise & Company, Human Resource Consulting, was a guest speaker on April 3, and he spoke to the group about his "Four-Step Approach to Salary Negotiation" plus a bonus tip prior to"sealing the deal".

During the second meeting the group held a very engaging discussion on being "Over qualified" and age issues in the job search experience. One PNR participant stated that the "Open discussions were informative". Another stated that they
valued the "sharing, receiving, & collaboration" among the group.

Social media was a topic of interest for the group on May 1, and although LinkedIn is still the primary source to e-network many other types of online resources were discussed such as using Twitter for job news & events, online classified, and Facebook private and public options.

We look forward to the group growing and evolving as the cohort loses members that gain employment and welcomes new members just entering the job market. Special guest, Diane Helbig, international speaker and author of Lemonade Stand Selling and Expert Insights will speak on June 19.

PNR meets the first and third Wednesday of each month with the next session scheduled for June 5, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Call: 440-284-4217 to RSVP. TC

PNR Member Spotlight
Donald Burgett
Donald (Don) Burgett came to OhioMeansJobs Lorain County seeking an IT Supply Chain Systems Analyst and Project Leader position.

In 2018, as part of a cost cutting measure, the company he was working for decided to transfer several IT positions, including his position, overseas to Poland and India. At the time, he was provided outplacement services and within a few months he was able to land a Business Analyst position with an automotive parts manufacturer. Unfortunately, due to the General Motors plant closures earlier this year his position was eliminated after just a few months, which required that he start his job search all over again.

When Don was filing for his unemployment benefits at OhioMeansJobs Lorain County (OMJLC), he discovered the many services, classes, and programs that he was not aware of and that were available to assist him with his
job search. Don elected to join the Professional Networking Roundtable to utilize the networking opportunities and tap into other resources available through the group.
"I like to thank everyone at OhioMeansJobs Lorain County for their help and support in my job search over the last four months, it was greatly appreciated, I wish everyone continued success in their careers and the success of the Professional Networking Round Table, you started a great program."
- Donald Burgett
OMJLC is pleased to announce that Don recently accepted a position with a local company as a Supply Chain Inventory Analyst. A position where he will be using his IT and Supply Chain skills to evaluate and set monthly product forecasts and reports for the company's distribution centers. Don says, "The nice thing about the position is that he will be working with several of his former colleagues." Some of them joined the company in 2015 when PPG closed the Strongsville facility, and they are excited that Don is joining them.

If you are an employer or recruiter looking to fill vacant positions with someone like Donald Burgett or other qualified professionals, please contact OMJLC @ 440-284-4225. TC
Youth In Motion
Adrian Wren is pictured above at Kendal in Oberlin where she worked in the insurance department.
Prior to turning to OhioMeansJobs Lorain County, I was on my last leg. As a student in the Medical Insurance Billing & Coding program, I had just lost my externship and I was not sure what I was going to do next.

While working with Tula Ramos, Youth Workforce Development Specialist at OMJLC, I explained my situation. She introduced me to Ann Cabbil, Employment Specialist also with OMJLC.
"I will never forget who helped me provide for my son - Tula and Ann at OhioMeansJobs Lorain County and the wonderful people at Kendal. Now my future looks much brighter for my son and I." - Adrian Wren
I felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. Within days Ann helped me find not only a place to finish my externship, but a place to work. I started a Paid Work Experience at Kendal of Oberlin retirement community in the insurance department. From day one, I received nothing but kindness and support form the staff and residents at Kendal. Following my externship, I applied for and was offered employment with a company the processes claims for workers compensation. TC
Summer
Work Experience

Summer is quickly approaching, and with it, many youth and young adults will be seeking employment, volunteer, and work experience opportunities during the break. As in previous years, the youth program (CCMEP) at OhioMeansJobs – Lorain County is actively recruiting youth (16-24) interested in paid work experience.

These experiences are valuable for both the youth and the worksites that host them. Eligible youth can earn $10.00 an hour, which is paid through our program, participate up to 25 hours a week, and learn valuable employment skills. Worksites benefit from the additional assistance our participants can provide during their work experience, and from the opportunity to scout potential future hires. It is also a great way to involve your organization in the community, and to have an impact on the workforce of tomorrow.

Meet Stacey Martin
Stacey Martin is pictured above at her new job
at The Nord Center.
After the transition from Elyria Memorial Regional Medical Center to University Hospitals in 2015, a corporate decision was made to discontinue LPN's for bedside nursing. Stacey Martin lost her job at Elyria Memorial Regional Medical Center on September 4, 2016 after 23 years with the hospital.

As a widower with two children Stacey was not sure which way to turn. Needing to find other employment to support herself and her family, Stacey turned to OhioMeansJobs Lorain County (OMJLC). She initially thought that OMJLC could assist her with updating her resume and job search assistance, but after attending orientation she quickly learned to her surprise that OMJLC
could assist her with continuing her education and increasing her earnings potential. Stacey realized that this was her opportunity to get her Registered Nursing (RN) degree. With OMJLC financial assistance, Stacey enrolled in the LPN to RN program at Lorain County Community College(LCCC) to pursue her Associates Degree. Stacey stated that, "My Workforce Development Specialist, Kim Duncan, helped me plan out every semester while attending LCCC. She always provided me with resources such information regarding food pantries, uniforms, and shoes for my clinicals." After much hard work Stacey completed the LPN to RN program in May 2018.
"OhioMeansJobs Lorain County is the perfect resource facility to seek help with employment, education, and job training, which will open the door to new opportunities!"

-Stacey Martin
Stacey began employment in August 2018 at The Nord Center working as an RN in the child and adolescent department. Stacey has hopes of returning to school to pursue her BSN. TC

2019 North Coast Business Expo
On April 25 approximately 40 local businesses and organizations participated in this year's North Coast Business Expo in Avon Lake where they shared information with attendees about their products, services, and resources to the community.

“The purpose of this event is two-fold, says Ted Esborn, the city’s economic development director. “First to showcase Avon Lake businesses, and second to create a regional networking event for small businesses. This is a great event for small business owners looking to make connections and even find some new resources.” This is the fifth consecutive year that the expo has been hosted by Sprenger Health Care Systems. Esborn reported that approximately 350 were in attendance with 42 vendors participating, and the exhibitor surveys showed that people liked this year’s mix of business, government, and non-profit exhibitors.

The city will donate a portion of the exhibitor fees from the Expo to the Avon Lake Community Resource Services. TC

Several of the management team at OMJLC attended the 2019 OhioWorkforce Leadership Forum at the Mohican Conference Ceter in Loudonville, Ohio on April 25 & 26, 2019. Presenters and facilitators of the forum were Beth Brinly and Lynn Bajorek of Maher & Maher. Key topics that the forum focused on were Customer Centered Service Design & Delivery and The Workforce System Response to Opioids in Ohio.
