Highlight: 2019 Quechua Alliance

This past weekend, on November 16th, The Ohio State University hosted the annual Quechua Alliance meeting. This event aims to promote the exchange of ideas about the Quechua language and Andean culture. With keynote speakers, Diego Tituaña and Devin Grammon, the group was guided in discussion about the International Year of Languages and learning Quechua abroad. There were other amazing presenters from all over the country, along with delicious Andean cuisine and music!

Elvia Andia Grágeda is awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura!

Elvia Andia Grágeda has just been awarded the Premio Nacional de Literatura of Bolivia in the category of Lengua Originaria. Each year, the Bolivian Ministry of Culture and Tourism awards this national prize to three authors, one in each of three categories: Novel, Poetry, and Lengua Originaria. These awards were established to promote the creation of literature in Bolivia and increase awareness of contemporary Bolivian authors. Andia wrote her work, Pirqakunawan parlaspa 'Speaking with the walls', in Quechua, fusing fiction and the life-stories of her parents and grandparents to tell of the strength of indigenous women and their role in sustaining the language, practices, and customs of their communities.

OLAC 2nd Call for Proposals

The Department of Modern Languages at Ohio University, Athens is to host the 17th annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference (OLAC). All Latin Americanists and Latinx Studies scholars, educators, and students from institutions of higher education are invited to participate in this annual meeting. All proposals are welcome and may include (but are not limited to) literature, linguistics, history, education, geography, political science, etc. The deadline to submit proposals is December 6, 2019. This year's conference will take place on February 28-29, 2020 at Ohio University and will feature guest speaker Dr. Brenda Elsey, Associate Professor of History at Hofstra University. In addition, free entertainment will be offered Friday night to include music and the presentation of a play. SPAN 2389: Spanish in the USA

Are you interested in understanding and analyzing the way language and ethnicity are discussed in the media today? If so, you may want to consider taking Spanish 2389 this Spring! This course will focus on connecting theoretical tools to social patterns, with a strong emphasis on current media and culture. This course fulfills the GE Social Science-Individual & Groups and GE Social Diversity in the US requirements. Peace Corps Opportunities

The Peace Corps has current opportunities for qualified applicants with background and skills in key sectors. Peace Corps volunteers serve for 2 full years after graduation in one of 60+ countries, with many openings in Latin America. This fully funded program covers 3 months of pre-service training, monthly living stipends, health care, safety, and security protection. Returned volunteers are highly competitive for graduate school scholarships and for employment in many fields. The application process is also highly competitive. Each quarter, jobs to different countries are posted on their website. Area Studies Centers Conference Grant program now accepting proposals

The Ohio State University Area Studies Centers are accepting proposals from OSU faculty members for the OIA Area Studies Centers Conference Grants program. To further develop and enhance area studies research and dialogue at Ohio State, this grant competition seeks proposals for conferences focusing on the study of global issues from interdisciplinary, multi-regional perspectives. Brief pre-proposals are to be submitted online by January 3, 2020.

Sebastián Calfuqueo Aliste Visit

Sebastián Calfuqueo Aliste, a contemporary Mapuche artist from Chile, is the first artist in residency hosted by the K'acha Willaykuna Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Arts and Humanities Collaboration. This collaboration is an interdisciplinary Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme initiative committed to critical engagement with Indigenous cultures of Abya Yala (the Guna denominator for the American continent in its entirety). He will be with us from Nov. 18-22 for a week of workshops, performances, reflections, project support, and exploration.

The Center for Latin American Studies at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for fellowships for Summer 2020 and Academic Year 2020-2021 under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program. These fellowships are available to all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at all levels and in any department who are pursuing a course of study which requires advanced foreign language and area studies training. We highly encourage that you attend one of our information sessions if you are considering applying for this fellowship.
