November 2018
Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

Tempus fugit ! It is hard to believe that next Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the good old United States. We have much to be thankful for—from our strong relationships with employers to great news of alumni success to our solid graduate student enrollment numbers. Below, I share some stories that highlight a few of our accomplishments as we head into the season of celebrations.

Sincerely,

Rajib Sanyal, Ph.D.

IMPACT— The Public Intellectual Face of Faculty

One of the many ways our esteemed faculty members share their expertise and contribute to the public’s understanding of current business and economic issues is by making themselves available to the media to comment on stories. Working with the Office of University Communications and Marketing, many of our faculty members have become go-to sources for regional and national media outlets, with insightful observations and cogent explanations of complex and relevant topics.  We also have faculty and administrators invited to speak to professional and industry groups. In the picture above,  Alan Cooper, Ph.D. , associate dean, is speaking at the New York State County Medical Society Conference on “Creating Efficiencies in Member Driven Organizations."
INNOVATION—Programs Prepare Students for Professional Licenses
Earlier this year, we launched a program in partnership with Becker Professional Education , a leading test coaching provider, to ensure that our students are prepared to succeed on the CPA Exam. Becker coaching is coupled with changes in the curriculum at the graduate level. The cost of the coaching is included in tuition fees to ensure that all students are able to take advantage of the test preparation services. We believe this will further enhance the attractiveness of our accounting graduates in the job market.
ENGAGEMENT—Practitioners Provide Important Insights

The Practitioner’s Perspective Lecture Series recently brought two speakers to campus. Andrew Bailen '78 , managing director at 3Pe Consulting, LLC, and the “king of pop-up stores,” discussed the enduring strength of physical stores and the recent trend of online retailers boosting their presence in malls and on Main Street. Scott Gibney, M.B.A. '87 (pictured above), drawing on his more than 30 years of experience as a senior executive at MasterCard Incorporated and his current passion for helping students with financial education, provided valuable tips on how to prepare for and succeed in a rapidly changing corporate world.
