The wildfire season usually starts in summer and runs into early fall in California, but recent low humidity, dry conditions and warm fast-moving winds have created ideal conditions for blazes to spread. Across the state, tens of thousands of acres burn with images emerging of horses being evacuated, roaming free or fleeing approaching fires. The situation is devastating!
Stories of valiant rescue volunteers and welcoming make-shift shelters abound throughout ravaged California communities – all focused on helping abandoned and displaced equines. The rescue efforts are very complicated because often animals caught up in fires flee or hide, especially when injured.
|
|
California’s equines need your help now and they will need your help in the weeks to come as they are reunited with owners or relocated to new homes. Feed, medical supplies and veterinary care are needed to help alleviate this critical situation.
Brooke USA is committed to help and you can make a difference! We will determine in the days to come where our efforts are best served but, in the meantime, donate to our California Equine Emergency Fund, and stay tuned for more information. Funds raised will be donated to organizations directly helping relief and recovery efforts.

“Every time there’s an emergency surrounding horses, the equestrian community rallies together. It’s always complicated and difficult, but I am always impressed how this community just jumps in and helps. These generous people move heaven and earth to make sure horses are safe.”

Donkeys like Choha get a better life, thanks to donors!
|
|
|
Four-year-old Choha transports garbage from the streets of Lahore to the town's garbage dump. Despite his difficult work, Choha is in excellent condition, with alert ears and a sleek coat, which his owner Saira Allahdat takes great care to groom.
Saira is devoted to Choha and knows exactly how to care for him since she joined the local women's donkey welfare group, supported by Brooke.
Every other week, the group is joined by Brooke Pakistan veterinarian Dr. Sabira Nazir, who focuses on helping women to improve their donkeys' well-being and their own livelihoods through nutrition programs, stable care and wound management.
Since Saira joined the group, her donkey no longer gets lame from infected wounds. In the past, when Choha walked on a sharp object, Saira treated it with a traditional remedy that she thought would help - but actually made matters much worse.
|
|
"Before I would put battery acid on the foot. Now, I know to remove whatever is in his foot and put iodine on it, bandage it and make sure he is rested."
The group has also help shift the local belief that donkeys don't suffer; transforming the way the women understand the needs of the animals they depend on, as Saira explains:
"I realize now that if I feel pain, so does my donkey, so we need to manage it properly. Without Choha, I could not earn any money. The donkeys help a great deal."
|
|
Most horses, donkeys, and mules like the one above, who work in garbage dumps in poor communities around the world, are not nearly as fortunate as Choha. That's why it's so important that we continue to fund equine welfare programs to reach them.

Immersion Trip to Guatemala:
Insight into the Projects we Fund First-Hand
|
Brooke USA Ambassadors Ramon Dominguez and Allison Springer pose with children from the Santa Maria La Fuente community on the first day of the immersion trip.
|
In October, Brooke USA’s Major Gifts Officer Amanda Miller traveled to Guatemala with two Brooke USA ambassadors, Ramón Dominguez and Allison Springer, to see the work Brooke USA funds. Mario Sapón, the director of our partner program ESAP (Healthy Equines for All People), led the trip through two communities: Santa Maria La Fuente and Talquetzal.
In both communities, they watched demonstrations led by ESAP’s head handler, Lester. He works with equine owners to teach them proper handling techniques, with a focus on reducing harm and preventing trauma to the animals. In Santa Maria La Fuente, Lester worked with mares and foals, teaching gentle handling procedures to check hooves and how to properly halter the animals. In Talquetzal, he led a demonstration on mule handling. Nearly 30 community members gathered to learn and socialize.
|
The youngest owner was 15 years old, and he had brought the first mule he’s ever owned—a gift from his father four months prior. He had been introduced to ESAP through the community, attending the training sessions for more than a year in preparation for his first mule. He was committed to learning proper handling techniques.
The second full day in Guatemala was the one that carried an enormous weight in everyone’s hearts. That day, they traveled to communities that were destroyed by Volcan de Fuego in June. You may remember that in the days following the disaster, Brooke USA undertook an emergency fundraising campaign to allow ESAP immediate aid to those in need.
Amanda commented, “The devastation was utterly overwhelming. I was struck by areas that had been wiped out by the flow of lava. Guatemala is a beautifully lush and green country; but these areas were completely blackened, barren and scorched. Huge black gorges just ripped through this beautiful landscape, sometimes right through communities that had clearly been lively and active just hours before the eruption.”
Within one week of the eruption, ESAP was helping to feed and water more than 50,000 animals. The horses, donkeys and mules they kept safe and alive in the aftermath of this tragedy means that, after rebuilding, these families will be able to return to a homestead with healthy working animals that will help them survive. While government help wasn’t available for five weeks after the eruption, ESAP’s quick assistance—which was made possible by Brooke USA donors
—
saved the lives of many equines.
This work wouldn’t be possible without your support. Thank you for making so much change, growth and learning possible for so many people in Guatemala and around the globe.

It all began with Dorothy Brooke, 84 years ago, who rescued 5,000 American, British, and Australian war horses who had been abandoned by their armies in Cairo after World War One. In this beautiful photo of Dorothy, her compassion was being expressed by feeding one of her rescued horses. Today, Brooke USA is carrying on her mission, as we continue to alleviate suffering of working equines around the world, in part by improving their nutrition through our
Full Tummy Project.
We also invite you to honor and remember the animals that Dorothy Brooke rescued, and the ones who who gave so much in WW1 by reading our research into America's horses and mules who served, suffered, and died alongside their soldiers.
This scholarly and moving collection of information and photos was assembled by Brooke USA volunteer and Dot Founding Member, Jo Ellen Hayden, as part of our partnership with the
United States WW1 Centennial Commission.
