AIR QUALITY MONITORING & PLANNING FOR POTENTIAL EVACUATIONS THIS SEASON

Dear SBMS Families,

With the deadly and destructive fires burning in California and rain in the weather forecast for next week, there is much anxiety in our community and, of course, tremendous sadness and worry across our state. Here at school, we are undertaking our normal activities with Career Study Week and Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences underway. We are fortunate to be able to provide a sense of stability to our students during this time while many schools are under evacuation due to proximity to the fires and/or closed due to air quality.

AIR QUALITY MONITORING
Please know we are monitoring air quality and are always prepared to adjust outdoor activities at school should air quality conditions exceed safe levels. Some helpful links to monitor air quality are AirNow.org and OurAir.org.
PLANNING FOR EVACUATIONS
As we head into another rainy season -- and with fire season still ongoing -- the chance for evacuations remains and may be the new normal for the foreseeable future. Sadly, the ongoing fires in our state this week are a reminder that we live in an area where evacuating may mean you only have a few minutes to leave. We encourage all families to have plans in place should they have only a few minutes or 24 hours to evacuate.

We estimate that nearly 20% of our families may live in or near a debris flow evacuation zone. If you live in a known evacuation zone, we encourage you to make plans now for the possibility of having to leave your home. Should Highway 101 close this season, we understand that your family may have difficulty getting to/from school or from locations to which you may have evacuated. Please plan accordingly with thought given to how you can safely drive to/from the SBMS campus.

We always endeavor to keep our school open in order to bring a sense of normalcy for children who live in an evacuation area while also serving the students and parents who live outside these zones. Should we need to close, we will give as much advance notice as possible.

UPDATED THRESHOLD FOR EVACUATIONS
The National Weather Service has adjusted the threshold for evacuations this year, with 0.8 inches of rain predicted in an hour to trigger an evacuation for areas in the Thomas Fire (see graph below). Preparedness is essential.
READY, SET, GO
In order to provide clear and concise communication to residents, the Sheriff's Office and the Office of Emergency Management will be using a "Ready, Set, Go!" system for communication. A Weather Advisory will be sent to get us  Ready  for a storm. An Evacuation Warning will be sent telling us to get  Set  to leave, and an Evacuation Order will be issued informing those in the risk zone for debris flow to  Go Click here for more information.

At SBMS, our teachers and staff are trained in safety response procedures, and we are well prepared with our own evacuation plan in place. When storms or fires are nearby, we are always in contact with local emergency response officials. Every decision we make is with the safety of our students, parents, and teachers in mind.

READYSBC.ORG
We hope all of our families are familiar with the county's local storm preparedness website, Santa Barbara County Ready. We hope everyone will take time to read through their extensive tips and preparedness recommendations. Please see the additional links below, which we hope will help you and your family as you make decisions regarding safety and evacuations.

FINDING & SHARING HOMES
If you have extra rooms in your house, a guest house, or a vacation rental, and could host an evacuated family, please let  Victoria know, and we will contact you in the case of an evacuation order. Alternatively, if you can provide additional support for evacuated families such as hosting them for a meal, hosting a student sleepover, or helping with a carpool, please let us know. Thank you in advance for your support of our SBMS family community!

Thank you to our tremendous community, our first responders, and our families who have been through so much this past year.
