November 2018
"Thank you very much for talking with me last night after the program. It was a privilege to attend the evening. The combination of Jack's presentation and the thoughtful contributions you both shared created a powerful evening, rich with empathy, support, and invaluable reach to illuminate the deeply painful feelings of grief after a suicide loss." - Participant at After Suicide: Understanding Your Grief Presentation (Spring 2018)
After Suicide: Understanding Your Grief

Survivors of suicide loss may travel a path of complicated grief. At our upcoming session, we aim to help loss survivors better understand suicide and the grief that happens when a suicide occurs. We welcome you to join us in Arlington on November 28 for a presentation from John R. (Jack) Jordan, Ph.D.

Jack Jordan, Ph.D. is  a clinical psychologist and experienced grief therapist who has been working with survivors of suicide loss for more than 40 years. In our new blog, Jack elaborates on some of the themes covered at the presentation.

He writes:
"In its wake, suicide may leave what one suicide loss survivor calls 'all the collateral damage.' Suicide loss survivors are left with so many 'whys?" - why did they do this, why didn't I see it coming, why didn't I do more to stop them, why do people treat me differently now, why am I taking so long to 'get over' this?"
Boston's Young Professionals Trained in Suicide Prevention

Our Community Education and Outreach team presented to the Young Professionals Group of Partners Corporate, Neighborhood Health Plan, and Partners Community Physicians Organization on how to notice changes in the behavior of those they work with that may suggest risk for suicide or ment al health issues.

Nearly 50 attendees participated in the facilitated discussion about ways to reduce stigma in the workplace, as well as identifying protective factors within their organization, such as Employee Assistance Programs, mental health breaks, and other health initiatives.

Save the Date for the Annual Memorial

Samaritans' Annual Memorial allows us to come together to remember and honor our loved ones whom we have lost to suicide.  Those who attend range from people who have suffered a recent loss to  people who are remembering a loved one lost years ago. It is an opportunity to reconnect, support one another, and share memories.

The program will take place on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 630 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Center.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the non-denominational service -  whether through submitting a song, a poem, or a letter for the event's program,  or simply by being present.
Welcome to Samaritans New Board Member, Jill Borrelli!

Our newest Board member Jill Borrelli, LICSW volunteered at a crisis center during college, and her experience there led to her decision to become a social worker - and more importantly, the realization of the power in being fully present with another person.

Jill has worked at Tufts Health Plan for nearly 20 years. She is currently the Director of Appeals, Grievances, and Operations Business Performance. In this role, she oversees multiple teams focused on operational efficiency, strategic planning, compliance, and program development. In addition, she is the adviser for the Tufts Health Plan LGBTQ+ business resource group, on the enterprise mentoring team, and is a mentor.

Jill has a BA in sociology from Miami University and a Master's in Social Work from Boston University. Before her time at Tufts Health Plan, Jill worked for many years as a child and family therapist and later a clinical director of a treatment program for adolescent girls.  Jill lives in Framingham with her wife and two children. She is actively involved with Under the Same Moon, a nonprofit organization that supports a school community in Guatemala.
