Count Feeder Birds for Science
Project FeederWatch
is a winter-long (November-April) survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. Starting November 10th, your bird counts can help you keep track of what is happening in your own backyard and help scientists track long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. With FeederWatch, your observations become part of something bigger.
Anyone interested in birds can participate. You can count birds as often as every week, or as infrequently as you like: the schedule is completely flexible. All you need is a bird feeder, bird bath, or plantings that attract birds.

Beetles are considered earth’s natural jewels. An assortment of beetles exquisitely rendered in sculpted paper for a new exhibit by artist Carla DeMello will convince you of nothing less. As the late fall deepens into winter, drop by the Top Shelf Gallery at Mann Library for an eye-opening look at the mysterious beauty to be found when we look down to the six-footed creatures among us.
Carla Elizabeth DeMello is an Ithaca, NY artist. All her life, she’s worked and played with any material that catches her eye—colorful, sticky, natural, malleable, goopy, or beautiful. These paper sculptures pay tribute to the beetles of our world.

God occupies our nation’s consciousness, even defining to many what it means to be American. Nonbelievers have often had second-class legal status and have had to fight for their rights as citizens. R. Laurence Moore (History Department, Emeritus) and Isaac Kramnick (Government Department, Emeritus) will talk about the historical and contemporary place of atheists in American public life, which they explore in their recent book,
“Godless Citizens in a Godly Republic.”

Pipeline Politics: Assessing the Benefits and Harms of Energy Policy
(Praeger, Sept. 2018). Dr. Finkel is professor of healthcare policy & research and director of the Office of Global Health Education at Weill Cornell Medical College. She will discuss the benefits, limitations, and dangers of transporting crude oil and natural gas by pipeline, and the dangers to human health and the environment posed by spills, leaks, and explosions.
Dr. Finkel is also the author of
Cancer Screening in the Developing World: Case Studies and Strategies from the Field
(Dartmouth, 2017) and editor of
The Human and Environmental Impact of Fracking: How Fracturing Shale for Gas Affects Us and Our World

Looking for Ways to Reduce Your Pain?
If you are a woman aged 60 or older who experiences chronic pain, you may qualify for a new research study in Ithaca. The Restorative-Flow Yoga Study
is an important research project that is looking at restorative-flow yoga to help reduce pain and inflammation in women 60 and older who experience chronic pain and is offered through Cornell University.
Study participants will be randomly selected to participate in one of two groups
Classes and in-class supplies are FREE and you could earn up to $50 for your participation!
*Please note the downtown yoga studio is accessed via a 14-step staircase.

Volunteer for Research Study to Help Promote Clean Energy in Tompkins County
Tompkins County area households who are on the smart energy grid are being invited to participate in a smart home energy research project with
Pecan Street Inc.
, a 501(c)(3) energy and water research organization.
Participants will receive eGauge devices that collect one-second interval energy data viewable in real-time through a secure online platform. Each eGauge device
―
provided at no charge to participants
―
will be mounted inside or adjacent to the home’s electrical panel by a licensed electrician. Pecan Street will prioritize owner-occupied households that already have rooftop solar, plug-in electric vehicles, and/or home energy storage systems in place.
Participation in the program is completely free and voluntary. Interested households will go through a preliminary screening process to determine eligibility, and those chosen to participate will sign agreements to protect their data privacy and confidentiality. The anonymized data collected by Pecan Street will be shared with university researchers, including some at Cornell, and industry-leading companies to help cities like Ithaca develop and expand upon their clean energy policies and programs.

Law School Exam Proctors Needed
The Cornell Law School is looking for exam proctors for the final exam period. The exam period for the fall semester is from December 5
th
through December 17
th
. Most exams begin at 9am requiring you to arrive by 8:30am to get to your room and prepared for students to arrive. Exams can run from 2 hours to 8 hours in length depending on the exam and your room assignment. Law School exam proctors are required to achieve “courteous control” while administering exams. A calm, confident attitude on the part of proctors greatly assists in making the exam process run as smoothly as possible. Proctors are instructed and trained in the following areas: responsibilities before an exam begins, during the exam, and the end of exam; what to do if a student becomes ill; proctoring exams with accommodated students; handling student questions about an exam; use of material during exams, minimal knowledge of our exam taking software and reporting possible honor code violations to the Law School Registrar.

Lifelong's Free Tax Program – Volunteers Needed
Tax Preparers
- Lifelong’s Tax Preparers are a diverse, skilled and fun
group of volunteers who enjoy the challenge and the camaraderie of being
part of the program and of giving back to the community.
Preparers use materials provided by the IRS plus a week- long training
session delivered by experienced volunteers to pass the on-line exam
required by the IRS. Tax clinics are held at Lifelong Thursday/Friday/Saturday from late January until the tax deadline in April. Tax Preparers generally work one to two 4 ½ hour sessions per week.
Tax Greeters
- TCE Greeters are the first point of contact with the
several hundred taxpayers who come to Lifelong for this free and valued
service. They welcome taxpayers at the Thursday/Friday/Saturday clinics,
generally working one 4 ½ hours shift per week. Tax Greeters are also key
to the clinics running smoothly as they respond to on-tax questions from
taxpayers, monitor wait times and insuring taxpayers are matched with the
right volunteer preparer for their particular return. A minor amount of
reading preparation from IRS supplied materials and passing a short
certification exam is required.

Volunteer Research Assistant (Ongoing through May 2019):
Description:
Our research staff seek volunteers to assist with preparing, sorting, and measuring oyster samples. This project will help to monitor changes in populations of oysters from the Florida coastline, as part of our developing research in conservation paleobiology.
Availability:
Monday through Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Volunteers should be prepared for approximately one five-hour shift per week. This project will conclude in May of 2019, at which point new volunteer opportunities may be available for those interested in continuing to be engaged in our Collections department.
KDT Education Docent (Ongoing):
Description:
Our Museum Education Staff seeks volunteers to assist with our
Kids Discover the Trail
programming at the Museum of the Earth. Volunteers should have an interest in facilitating programs for first grade students visiting the Museum from throughout Tompkins County. Specialized knowledge of geology or paleontology is appreciated, but not required. Our staff will provide all necessary training for planned activities.
Availability:
KDT Volunteers should be available on a weekday morning for an approximately 4 hour shift between 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. These programs will be offered to first grade students beginning early 2019. Training sessions will occur the second Wednesday of every month until programs begin, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Teacher Friendly Guide to Climate Change Volunteers (Ongoing):
Description:
There is an urgent need to strengthen Climate Change education, and our staff are doing all we can! We are currently distributing our
Teacher Friendly Guide to Climate Change
to every public school in the country (and for free!), and seek volunteers to assist with the distribution process. We will need help coordinating contents, packing envelopes, and distributing packages.
Availability:
Shifts are flexible, but are preferred Monday through Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Volunteers should plan for an approximately 2 hour shift.

Free Science Workshop Volunteers Needed
At the Free Science Workshop (FSW), we provide a supportive and interest-driven space for low-income, underserved, and minority youth and their families to explore their world through science and making. At FSW, youth discover the wonders of STEM through free engaging hands-on programming and mentorship.
We are currently seeking volunteers to help mentor and guide youth as they explore STEM-related fields at the workshop. Applicants should enjoy working with kids age 6 to 12, feel comfortable facilitating open-ended informal science exploration, and be able to make a weekly commitment to help us. Could you or someone you know be our next great mentor?
Our science workshop at 210 Hancock Street currently needs volunteers on Mondays from 3:00 – 6:00PM and Tuesdays from 3:00 – 5:00PM.
We would also be happy to discuss other ways to get involved, including guest scientist visits, administrative tasks or community building.

Hotline Volunteers
help staff our 24-hour hotline and provide crisis counseling advocacy, support, and referrals to adult and youth victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse. Advocates are required to make a minimum one-year commitment that includes four hotline shifts per month.
