A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI |
In this week's Torah portion, Vayechi, just before his death, Jacob gathers his sons in order to tell them about their collective futures.
Some of his pronouncements are good and some are bad. At first blush, one might have wanted all of the comments and predictions to be positive. We humans tend to like upbeat stories that end happily.
But this is not the Torah's way. The Torah narrative unfolds honestly, with positive and negative revelations. We see the good side of our biblical heroes and we see the bad. Good things happen, bad things happen. So why should Jacob's prophesy be any different?
Indeed, the future of Jacobs's children will have its good moments and its bad moments. The futures of the Israelites, the Land of Israel, and the Jewish people, too, will have high points and low points.
With very rare exception, no story, no person, no place, no situation, and no life is "all good" or "all bad". This is a constant in the universe that God created. The sooner we recognize that the sun does not shine every day, the sooner we can navigate our lives with realistic expectations and, hopefully, be happier.
On Kol Nidre I discussed the Talmudic phrase:
"Gahm Zeh Ya'avor", ("This Too Shall Pass"). It is a piece of wisdom that explains that no matter what is happening, whether it is good, bad, or neutral, it will pass. It is a reminder that the world around us, our emotions, and our lives, are all fluid and subject to change.
Jacob's deathbed honesty to his sons, and to the reader, is an important reminder that we should continually assess our own lives with an understanding that there will always be peaks and valleys. When at the top we need to have the humility of knowing that a valley may await us. When in the nadir of our life we can look up and know that there will be a pinnacle in our future.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
