P-47 Thunderbolt Restoration Project
One of the most produced American aircraft of WWII, the P-47 is an important part of the CAF fleet. Following a crash in 2006, CAF SoCal was assigned to restore this P-47, nicknamed the "Meat Chopper," to its original splendor.
CAF SoCal needs the community's help to restore this piece of American aviation history. Read more about how it survived its 2006 crash and what you can do to help restoration efforts in the announcements, or visit CAF's Living History Presentation about the Battle of the Bulge and the P-47 on Sat., 12/14.

SS Poseidon
Visitors to the L.A. Maritime Museum will find a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS
Poseidon
was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure.”
Fifteen men built the model over a period of three months.
Poseidon
is 21.5 feet long, and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS
Queen Mary
, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach, California.
The film’s plot required
Poseidon
to suffer repeated explosions and a rollover, but the model was successfully repaired and used in television commercials before arriving at the Museum.

P-47 Thunderbolt Restoration Project
Commemorative Air Force SoCal Wing
In March of 2018 the Commemorative Air Force, headquartered in Dallas Texas, assigned the task of restoring the P-47N Thunderbolt, N47TB to the CAF Southern California Wing. In 2006, after a maintenance period, the CAF P-47, named the “Meat Chopper” was on a test flight in Albuquerque New Mexico when moments after takeoff the aircraft’s engine caught fire. The pilot executed an extremely skilled landing, saving the aircraft and his own life. On landing, one wing broke, dropping the airplane onto its belly. Quick action by the fire department allowed the aircraft to avoid complete destruction in the fire.
In the intervening 12 years, tremendous work has been done toward repairs to the airframe. Much more needs to be done to return the aircraft to flying condition, but the CAF SoCal restoration crews, as well as our general membership, are brimming with enthusiasm and justified pride for having been selected as the guardians of this noteworthy aircraft.
We need your help to get the Meat Chopper back in the air and honor those who sacrificed so much for our freedom. To make a donation, please
