Our HRC is a free service and the best first step for anyone confronting a housing challenge.
This one-stop-shop helps people with their housing needs. When you call the HRC, a trained housing specialist will conduct an intake screening. Your responses will guide the screening process to recommend options connecting you to the programs and resources that may be able to assist you in addressing your housing needs. Such programs will include:
- community resources and programs that provide housing assistance
- affordable housing options
- information on subsidized housing and other long-term housing options
Each program has its own eligibility requirem
ents, which is w
hy we need to ask you questions. Our specialists will figure out all options and connect you to the right programs and resources based on eligibility and circumstance. To learn about all of our services, please visit here.
Chuck O'Brien, former director, Macomb Homeless Coalition shares, "A half-hour conversation with the Housing Resource Center is probably worth about two weeks of shoe leather because that's how long it would take, minimally, to find out about all these programs."
We have 16 employees working in our Housing Resource Center, let's turn to a few to see how they became involved with CHN and how what they do helps those we serve.
Kate Deighton - Housing Resource Coordinator
Before coming to CHN,
 I volunteered at a few food pantries as well as the Welcome Inn. While at the Welcome Inn, I volunteered with someone who worked at CHN and she encouraged me to apply for a position in the Housing Resource Center.
I enjoy being able to work with residents in our
Unity Park community, by helping them navigate the how-to's of finding and applying for resources, which will help themselves and their families.
Kelly Gee - Housing Specialist
Many years ago, I was experiencing  homelessness and CHN was able to house me through our Permanent Supportive Housing program. After I was in stable housing, I was able to finish my degree, graduate from college and then I was hired on at CHN.
I am a compassionate person and feel that this character trait is
certainly a necessity in this job. I believe, a lot of times, the people reaching out to us, need someone to really listen to them and point them in the right direction on what to do next.
Maria Massos - Housing Resource Coordinator
I have always felt empathy and sadness for those who are homeless, especially individuals you see on the side of the road, in an abandoned building/ place, on a lonely street, or roaming without a roof over their head. I had worked as an outpatient therapist for many years and wanted to do something else. When the opportunity came along to work at CHN, I was ready, and excited. I enjoy working at CHN and playing a role in assisting individuals and families who are in need of housing assistance.
Most of my duties this year have been working with some of my colleagues on getting people housed at the supportive housing units at Jefferson Oaks. I have met people on the phone, worked on applications with them, and have also seen many get housed. Thus, seeing people through their process of struggle to actually becoming housed is pretty rewarding.
Vicki Peterson - Housing Specialist
A colleague suggested  I apply as a I am a former child welfare social worker, with many years of experience working on various committees including the Oakland Community Health Network - Peer Choices board chair, Community Evaluation and Education committee, etc. I am grateful I was offered a position to continue my mission to assist those who cannot help themselves.
I feel there are several things we do that impact those we serve:
- Screening to determine how to best assist our callers.
- Going out into the field to make visits to the Oakland County clubhouses and drop-inn centers.
- Educating program participants to maneuver the system thereby getting more of their needs met.
- Facilitating CHN's CAC (Consumer Advisory Committee) quarterly.
