March 22, 2020
Dear Families,

I am sure that yesterday's news regarding Kansas City's shelter-in-place order has you wondering about our plans for school curbside pick-ups of student materials, which is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24. Yesterday afternoon metro-area superintendents met with Mayor Quinton Lucas to discuss the proclamation. As soon as our Diocesan superintendent informed principals, I immediately called to ask if we should revise our schedule. Mayor Lucas indicated that we could proceed as planned, as our plans are necessary for a continuation of school (see end of message for part of the proclamation). Because we are taking necessary precautions to keep our faculty and staff safe while preparing for the pick-up, we continue to stagger times when employees can be in the building. We are very close to having all the students' items "staged" (see photo above, which shows our lobby; the gym is also a center of staging), and we MAY be able to begin pick-ups later tomorrow afternoon, Monday, March 23. IF that is the case, we will send a text alert to school families with schedule. Otherwise, we will proceed with Tuesday's schedule.

The decision to continue as planned was made per Mayor Lucas' and Dr. Peters' approval and in consultation with the St. Peter's School Board.

It is important for all families to note that we WILL follow these guidelines during the curbside pick-up on the south circle drive side of the main school building:

  • Drivers will remain in vehicles - please open rear window if possible/van door, or delivery personnel will open rear passenger door for placement of bags.
  • Delivery personnel will wear gloves and may opt to wear mask/cover mouth and nose with scarf or bandana.
  • Delivery personnel and drivers should practice social distancing during the pick-up.
  • Please provide your student's (students') last name when picking up. Most grade levels have one bag per pupil, but some of our older students will have two bags.
  • Unless you have no other option for care, we ask you to leave your children at home during the pick-up times.
  • Please be patient as we retrieve your family's items...we'll move as quickly as we can!

Please contact me for a delivery to the outside of your home if you are uncomfortable with this process or if any of the following apply:

  • you have traveled to a state with known widespread community transmission (currently California, Florida, New York, and Washington state) on or after March 15.
  • you have visited Eagle, Summit, Pitkin, and Gunnison counties in Colorado in the week prior to March 15 or after.
  • you have traveled on a cruise ship or river cruise on or after March 15.
  • People who have previously been told by Public Health to quarantine because of their cruise ship travel should finish out their quarantine.
  • you have traveled internationally on or after March 15.
  • People who have previously been told by Public Health to quarantine because of their international travel to China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran should finish out their quarantine.
  • you have received notification from public health officials (state or local) that you are a close contact of a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19. You should quarantine at home for 14 days since your last contact with the case. (A close contact is defined as someone who has been closer than 6 feet for more than 10 minutes while the patient is symptomatic.

People who are currently being tested for COVID-19 should remain in home isolation, or hospital isolation.

Our teachers have worked very hard to put materials together - in order to remain positive and supportive of one another, we have shared some laughter at "Study Abroad at Southwest High School" memories, as we now prepare for "Study at Home."

We appreciate your many positive messages of support, know you have more questions regarding home-based study (more communication on that as soon as I can - we are really working to move materials, and I'm only now taking this quick break to send a message), and are grateful for your prayers. We continue to pray for all of our school families and our school children.

On an evening when some might be looking forward to returning to school after a Spring Break with a bit of reluctance, instead we find ourselves disheartened, concerned, and already missing our students.

A friend of mine who is a teacher in NOLA reminded me that when they were preparing for Hurricane Katrina, they weren't as worried about lesson planning and school work, but rather preparing for safety. I read a similar post last night reminding us that the "Katrina kids" are now doctors, lawyers, teachers, hairdressers, nurses, business owners, engineers, you name it - the point is, we need to embrace the opportunity to stay connected and build relationships, as well as reinforce a sense of routine for them.

Please continue to love your children, provide them opportunities to spread joy in your home, and partner with us in providing the best educational experiences possible during a time we could have only imagined.

God Bless,

Angie Meyer
