Monroe County Schools Remembering Coach Dan Pitts

The Monroe County Schools and Mary Persons High School families are mourning the passing of Coach Dan Pitts earlier today.  Pitts was 88 years old.

Pitts was head football coach of the MP Bulldogs for 39 years. The MP football stadium bears his name.

Pitts began coaching at Mary Persons in 1959. After a slow start in his first four seasons, his teams posted winning records in 34 of the next 35 seasons. He led the Bulldogs to a state championship in 1980. At his retirement in 1998 he was the winningest high school football coach in Georgia with 346 total wins.  He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Once asked about the most important game in his career, Pitts mentioned a 1960 win over Fort Valley which was defending a championship. "It probably kept me from being fired," he laughed.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Hickman, Jr., who played and coached under Coach Pitts, asked that everyone keep Coach Pitts' family, as well as the MPHS family and the hundreds of MP football alumni, in their thoughts and prayers over the coming days.

Graveside services will be held Friday, April 23,  at 11 a.m. in the Forsyth City Cemetery.
