Thank you to all of our "Face-to-Face" Bears, their families, teachers, and staff for the outstanding efforts over the past six school days as many of our Bears returned to campus. We have a number of new health and safety procedures and I greatly appreciated everyone's cooperation.

Athletic Director Sherman has included a short message below for our student-athletes as fall sports will resume on Monday. In order to participate, all students will need to have their physicals uploaded online.

In this issue we have expanded upon college planning which I encourage all potentially college bound students to look over. There is some very helpful information plus OCPS has scheduled two financial aid nights, one in English and one in Spanish, for the middle of next month.

Make it a great week and remember to visit the OCPS website all along as it is continuously updated with the very latest news which can affect our Bears.

Dates to Watch For
August 31: Curbside Meal Pick-Up Monday for those students in LaunchEd 30 minutes after the final bell for the entire week ahead
August 31: Fall Athletics resume
Sept. 7: Labor Day Holiday

Cypress Creek High School remembers Dr. Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech given 57 years ago last Friday (Aug. 28, 1963). On this date, a quarter-million people assembled in Washington, D.C., to hear Dr. King deliver his powerful speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. As you can see above, the crowd stretched as far as the Washington Monument!

We want to let you know the school board updated their face covering policy. The changes include additional requirements for a medical waiver allowing for a face mask exemption and prohibiting masks with a respirator valve, as well as neck gaiters and neck buffs as face coverings.

District officials also announced to the school board that fall sports will return to tryouts and practice on August 31 and competitions as early as September 14 for most fall sports. Football will return Friday, September 17.

And finally, as a reminder, please do not send your children to school when they are not feeling well or if someone in your household has tested positive for COVID-19 or you have symptoms and are waiting on the results of a test.

Starting Your College Search
One of the first steps in the college planning process is to explore colleges. With thousands of choices, it's hard to know where to begin. Take these five steps to kick off your college search and start building a list.

1. Open up a discussion with your family, guardian, school counselor, or teacher about your interests and goals. Find out how you can start building a network and create a mentor/mentee relationship for advice and support. Talk to people who've been to college and learn about their experience.

2. Keep an eye out for college brochures and emails in your mailbox and inbox. This information gives you a better understanding of your options and can help you find the school that's right for you. If you're not receiving college mail yet, opt in to the College Board Student Search ServiceĀ® to connect with colleges and scholarship programs. To opt in, visit this page, sign into your College Board account, and click "Yes" in the blue section at the top of the page.

3. Attend college fairs held at your school, a nearby conference center, or a local community center. These events are an ideal way to meet college representatives and ask questions about student organizations or dorm life. Make sure to get email addresses so you can send thank-you notes later.

4. Visit the college's website and social media accounts to get an idea of what campus life and classes are like. Get a glimpse of a college's day-to-day life through their Instagram and Snapchat accounts - from the comfort of your mobile device. Read 10 ways to learn about colleges online. A perfect way to make sure a college is the best fit for you is to visit the campus. Read The College Campus Tour Checklist to get the most out of your visit!

5. Use your free College Board account, and build a college list with the College Search tool. Start your search today at: BigFuture.org

How to Build a College List
Here's a step-by-step guide to create a college list on BigFuture. With our College Search tool, check out individual college profiles based on what's important to you (e.g., location, majors, cost, test scores). When you find a college that's a good fit, add it to your list. Edit the list as you explore new college profiles.

When you're viewing a college profile like this UF example, you'll see:

1. This option Add To My List.
2. A list of colleges under "Others who also view:"
3. Information on the college at a glance, deadlines, majors & learning environment, campus life, applying, paying, and transfer and international student resources.

When you add colleges to your list and view them in My Colleges, you'll see:

1. Quick facts about the colleges, including graduation rate, average cost after aid, and total undergrads.
2. Option to add more colleges to your list.

What are you waiting for? Start your college search on BigFuture today. We're here for your entire journey - from your first thoughts about college to your first day on campus!

Monday's Motivational Moment!mmm

Wisdom to live by from Warren Buffett at 90.
On Sunday, August 30, Warren Buffett turned 90 years old. He is the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.*, is one of the most successful investors of all time, and is the 3rd richest man in America having amassed a net worth estimated at $82 billion.

When he was a kid, he grew up doing odd jobs outside of school to make money such as delivering newspapers and saving up to buy pinball machines only to turn around and rent them to small businesses for their customers' entertainment (his first business which performed only average). He was not born into wealth nor did he want to go onto college after high school. However, his father pushed him on college so he reluctantly went to the University of Pennsylvania. What is fascinating is that for all his wealth today, he accrued nearly 90% of that sum after the age of 65! Buffet figured out back in high school that investing & saving well is important, but investing & saving well for a long time matters even more.

* One share of Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock sold for $327,431.00 at the end of this past business week (Aug. 28, 2020, 4:00PM).

Buffet's keys to success.
College students constantly ask him how they too can create this kind of wealth one day. He always stresses two things to young people: 1) the importance of making daily reading a habit in life; and 2) understanding the power of compound interest.

How can Buffett's life-time experience at 90 guide our Bears?
Never stop learning is king in the eyes of Buffett. It's easy to quit learning once you graduate from high school or college and get busy at work. But reading, learning and staying current on things pays dividends over time. Buffett often says he spends most of his work day reading (newspapers, books, annual reports, balance sheets) and thinking. He often equates gaining knowledge with the financial concept that made him rich. Inc. magazine asked Buffett how to get smarter. Buffett raised a stack of papers and said I "read 500 pages like this every day. That's how knowledge builds up, like compound interest. He will frequently remind students that, "All of you can read more, but very few of you will."

The idea behind compounding like Buffett relies on goes back a long time.
As for the notion of compounding, it is a relatively simple math process that dates back thousands of years. Below are two links that can show our Bears how investing or saving only a small amount of money starting while they are still in high school and consistently adding to it each month will lead to a much larger sum in relatively little time. Even though bank interest rates in the current economy are near zero, the practice of saving money, like Buffett did ever since he was a young man, pays off greatly in the long run. The links below will show you the power of compound interest from saving a little bit of money on a regular basis.
