Adult Education in November

This week in adult education:
Jesus, Race & Incarceration: Why Our Faith Prevents Us From Looking the Other Way
9:30 AM, Mary Beth Charters, Jonathan Shenk, Assembly Room
Does the life and teaching of Jesus offer any insight on the current climate of racial tension and burgeoning rates of incarceration in our country today? Do white people of faith have any responsibility or culpability regarding our nation's history of slavery and Jim Crow oppression? How does faith intersect with activism? There are more African Americans under correctional control today than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War. Mary Beth Charters and Jonathan Shenk will speak to these issues and to how race and incarceration have shaped their personal faith journeys, life, and activism.

See the  November Adult Education post  and the Adult Education page for the full listing of past and upcoming classes

Evening Advent Service
On December 1 at 5:00 PM, Nassau Church will be holding an evening Advent service led by renowned jazz bassist and composer, Ike Sturm and his ensemble. Familiar carols and newly-composed and improvised pieces will be woven through prayer and scripture for a truly remarkable beginning to the Advent season. The  Ike  Sturm  Ensemble is a family of friends and musicians playing original, contemplative music and creatively leading congregational song at Saint Peter's Church (the "Jazz Church") in New York City and around the world.  Featuring world renowned soloists Melissa Stylianou (voice), Godwin Louis (saxophone), Chris Dingman (vibraphone) and  Ike   Sturm (bass/compositions). A free-will offering benefiting Arm in Arm will be collected, and the service will be followed by a reception. Learn more about the Ike Sturm ensemble at www.ikesturm.com , and be sure to bring your family and friends!
