Ocean & Bay Intergroup News

All OA members are welcome to attend Ocean & Bay Intergroup (OBI) meetings held the first Tuesday of the month at St. Patrick Church, 2068 Cranston Street, Cranston, RI. The next meeting is TUESDAY, MARCH 6th at 7:30 p.m., with literature sales at 7 p.m.

NEW LOCATION!

Intergroup has settled very nicely into its new meeting space. Please come join us any first Tuesday of the month at:

Arnold Conference Center in the Regan Building
3 Regan Court (off 111 Howard Avenue)
Cranston, RI 02920

This location is easily accessed from Routes 95, 37 and 295. Howard Avenue runs between Pontiac and New London Avenues ( link to map ).

INTERGROUP MEETING TIME CHANGE UP FOR CONSIDERATION

Members of OBI will be discussing the possibility of meeting at an earlier time (still on the second Tuesday of the month). Currently, literature sales take place 7 to 7:30 p.m. and the meeting follows from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. A recommended time has not yet been proposed (there is no motion), but it will be discussed and could be as early at 6 p.m., or some time between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. If you or your group has a viewpoint on the time, please let it be known.

PUBLIC INFORMATION/PROFESSIONAL OUTREACH

The PI/PO Committee --the committee that works to help spread the news of OA recovery -- will meet on Monday, March 19th at 7 p.m. at a member's home in Cranston. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please send an email to [email protected] to express your interest and obtain details about the meeting.

MINI WORKSHOPS 2018

Mini Workshops will be taken on the road in 2018 with plans to hold them every few months around the state. Stay tuned for dates and topics!

LIABILITY INSURANCE

Intergroup members have been researching and discussing the issue of liability insurance for its board members and/or group meetings. At least one meeting location has requested proof of liability insurance. Insuring either the board and/or meetings is quite expensive and would have a considerable impact on Intergroup expenses. Discussion will continue this month.

INTERGROUP BUDGET

A great deal of time and consideration has been put into establishing a working budget with anticipated and actual expenses. The 2018 budget has not yet been finalized and approved.

WORLD SERVICE BUSINESS CONFERENCE

This year, Ocean and Bay Intergroup will not be represented at the WSO Business Conference in May.

REGION 6 SPRING ASSEMBLY

Two Ocean and Bay Intergroup members will represent us at the Region 6 Spring Assembly in Albany, NY, on April 14th. We are able to have one more representative, so if anyone is interested, please come to the March Intergroup meeting.

ALL OA MEMBERS are WELCOME to any and all Intergroup meetings!

INTRODUCING THE SECOND EDITION OF
The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions
of Overeaters Anonymous

OA's keystone book-The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous, Second Edition-is updated and improved, 28 years after is first publication.

Created specifically as a study of the OA Twelve Step recovery program, the OA Twelve and Twelve, Second Edition has been revised for clarity and inclusivity-with a restructured Step Four chapter to increase usefulness. Read how, through working the Twelve Steps and studying the Twelve Traditions, members have found "physical, emotional, and spiritual healing that we don't hesitate to call miraculous." Copyright 2018. Softcover; 180 pages; indexed.

"Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him."

Try another great resource - an OA Podcast!

This week's workshop leaders discuss the critical importance of Step Three to their recovery.  The OA program tells us emphatically that "Once we compulsive overeaters truly take the Third Step we cannot fail to recover" ( The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous , p. 27). Step Three allows us to accept help from a higher power, and in Step Three we decide to "follow spiritual guidance in making every decision" (The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous, p. 19).

References include the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous (Step Three), the Doctor's Opinion and the Third Step prayer
(p.63) in the book AA, and AA's Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (Step Three).

Q&A

Welcome to Overeaters Anonymous. Welcome HOME!

Q: WHAT IS A HOME GROUP?

~ A "home group" is the meeting that I have made a commitment to attending on a regular basis and being a part of the group. It is there that I get to know the members and they get to know me. Having a service position and participating in business meetings  has become an important part of being a member of my home group.

~ A "home group" is the OA meeting I regularly attend be it face-to-face or virtual meeting, such as a phone bridge meeting. It is where I provide the majority of my service and others know of my commitment to this particular group.

Q: WHAT MAKES A GOOD HOME GROUP?

~ There are so many things that help to define what makes a good Home Group. First, being there as example of how OA works and providing a solid message of recovery through practicing the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions. Along with that, a group that is welcoming to all -- particularly newcomers and returning members. Groups that have a regular rotation of leadership and service position provide ample opportunity for all to participate in sharing in recovery.

~ A good home group shows regular rotation of service positions to eliminate dominance as well as regularly scheduled business meetings/group conscience where all opinions/voices are welcome and heard.

Q: WHAT DOES YOUR HOME GROUP MEAN TO YOU?

~ My home group has provided me with a safe haven and hope, a real refuge from the disease of overeating. There people really care on a deep level about what is going on with me. I love my home group and the people in it. I feel a real "part of" being with others who really "get it".

~ A home group is important to me because it is where I demonstrate my ongoing commitment to my recovery program. It is through my demonstrated service responsibility and participation during the meeting that hopefully I show OA works. This provides the newcomer with a visual demonstration of this process in my life and hopefully shows him/her some sense of serenity and purpose with my new way of life.
