BY TAMARA STRIJACK
We have so many pressures put on us - some by others, some self-inflicted - to do things "right". Welcoming in another new year can sometimes feel this way, too. We make resolutions to eat better, to live better, to work out more. We create restrictions for ourselves and focus on outcomes. As a society, we are good at this. And we start young with our productive mindset.
I was one of those children who felt internal pressure to get things right. My years as an artist were short-lived. By age 6, after a year at school, I figured out that there was a "right" (and therefore, a "not right"
)
way to do things, and I was not going to take any chances. I didn't ever want to make a mistake or risk getting something wrong. So I stopped taking risks. Period. I played it safe. I stayed within the lines. In all aspects of my life, but especially when it came to art and music.
Fast forward 30-some-odd years and I stumble across the book
Ish
by Peter Reynolds.

ON-SITE COURSE
PRESENTED BY DR. GORDON NEUFELD
SIDNEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA
JULY 6 - 10, 2020 | $900 PER PERSON
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
Intensive III: Becoming Attached
unfolds and expands the six roots of attachment and puts the focus more on adults than in the first two Intensive levels. The course is also a journey through Dr. Neufeld's earlier theoretical development, which created the puzzle pieces that ultimately came together in the six roots of attachment. The
Intensive III
is designed not only to provide deeper theoretical understanding but also to give the opportunity for more personal integration of the material.
|
|
|
Intensive III: Becoming Attached
is offered occasionally as a destination learning opportunity and includes all fifteen sessions taught in person by Dr. Neufeld over five days. Sessions are taught from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm to allow participants to spend time with their families, or to utilize the time for reflection and contemplation.
The course will be held at the Mary Winspear Community Centre in Sidney, BC, a beautiful oceanside community just a short drive from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal and Victoria International Airport. There are plenty of nearby activities and accommodation options to suit the whole family. Come and enjoy Vancouver Island this summer!

Why can kids act caring one minute only to erupt in aggression in another? What are we to do when they lack caring or hurt others? We want to cultivate empathy in our kids but how can we do this without using artificial, and often detrimental measures like rewards, praise, or punishment to get there? Using the children’s picture book
The Sorry Plane
, Deborah MacNamara will examine the developmental science behind caring and empathy and discuss how to grow kids who care.
