Youth Risk Behaviors Survey for 7th and 8th Graders
Lewis F. Mayer Middle School has been selected, along with at least 50 other schools in Cuyahoga County, to participate in  this year's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) sponsored by the Prevention Research Center for Healthy  Neighborhoods at Case Western Reserve University. The survey, which is described in this attached letter/informed consent form, will ask about  the health behaviors of students in your child's school. The survey will ask questions about nutrition, physical  activity, injuries, and tobacco, alcohol, sexual activity, and other health risk behaviors. Students will be asked to  fill out a survey that takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. All answers for the survey questions are multiple  choice responses.
Your child will not enter his/her name on the survey and you will not learn about his/her responses. If  you are interested in past findings of this survey please visit www.prchn.org/yrbs .
I understand that if I do not want my child to participate in the survey then I should contact Mary Cory at his/her school at (440) 356-3510, ext. 3135 before Thursday, November 1.
The Cheesecake Factory Lunch Winners (from the Peanut Butter Drive)
Congratulations to Mrs. Cataldo's 7th grade Mentoring group, who brought it 40 jars/102 pounds of peanut butter! They were the winners of The Cheesecake Factory luncheon!
PenOhio / Power of the Pen
PenOhio is a club/team for students to experience writing instruction in a competitive environment. We strive to inspire students with the thrill of competition, then use the fruits of competition as a teaching tool in classrooms to help all learners. All that we encourage is in lock step with what Ohio encourages of our educators and schools to do.
The Mayer Middle School PenOhio team will consist of six (6) 7 th grade writers and six (6) 8 th grade writers. Both groups will have 2 alternates that also write at competitions. The team will compete in 2 or 3 tournaments. At each tournament, writers compose three original narrative works, each in 40 minutes, to prompts not known to them in advance. Each writer is judged in a round against up to 5 other writers from other schools, and judged by a PenOhio coach not known to the writer. The writer receives Rank and Quality Scores for each submission, plus a rich, constructive, encouraging comment regarding his/her work. The first tournament for MMS will be January 19 th at Oberlin College.

Last year, the MMS has 6 students (four 7 th graders and two 8 th graders) qualify and participate in the state championship tournament.

Any 7th or 8th grader interested in PenOhio/ Power of the Pen, see Mr. Chevalier!

Personalized Learning Platform FAQ
Each week we will highlight a different word associated with the Platform. For a full glossary of terms you may need defined, look for the link below in our Useful Links section.

Checkpoint
A checkpoint...
  1. Is a formative assessment.
  2. Clearly contributes to the completion of the Final Product(s).
  3. Supports Cognitive Skill development or conceptual understanding.
  4. Is an important opportunity for the student to receive feedback.
In addition to providing other forms of formative feedback, teachers may mark checkpoints in the platform as:
  • Red = checkpoint needs extensive revision, students should not move forward without significant re-work
  • Yellow = student must incorporate teacher feedback in order to be on-track
  • Green = student is on-track, no revision needed
Within a Math Unit, checkpoints operate more like exit tickets; they occur after some instruction has occurred, and are used to gauge students' understanding of the unit's enduring understandings. Math Units are designed to have ~1 checkpoint per week of instruction.

DID YOU KNOW
Students are able to write goals in the weekly planner on the Platform. They can note due dates and events coming up. They can put in a goal to read 20 pages each night. They can put in a note to study for an assessment each day. They can put in a note as to when they are taking an assessment or when a checkpoint is due. Encourage your children to use it as a planner - they can look ahead and put due dates as well as plan out projects / studying / homework.
PLP Workshop Open Office Hours
Evening Office Hours are being offered for parents who would like custom-tailored and hands-on assistance with navigating the personalized learning platform. Up to three families can sign up per time-slot. This is intentional so the workshop can be focused on more specific needs. Once signing up, please email Mrs. Melanie Wightman at mwightman@fairview.k12.oh.us with specific questions or concerns. Sign ups still available for Monday, October 29. If you prefer a one-to-one meeting, please email Mrs. Wightman for an appointment.

Testing
MAP benchmark testing round one is complete! Two more administrations will take place throughout the school year. Grade level Math and ELA teachers will be happy to provide you with specific dates and information.

Ohio State Testing will take place in the spring. These tests are extremely important for your child's long term success. It is never too early to begin getting ready!

Fairview Park PTA Council Reflections Art Program
The Ohio PTA, through National PTA, holds an annual cultural arts program, Reflections. Children in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit original works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film production and music composition. The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity as they reflect on the yearly theme. Teachers, parents, children and community can get involved in enhancing arts education though the Reflections program. The Reflections Program is one of the best examples of the PTA's ability to bring out the best in our youth. PTA strongly supports education in the arts. It is about creating educational excitement and involvement within our schools between parents, teachers and o ur kids.

Students can enter Reflections® in the following grade divisions - Primary: preschool-grade 2, Intermediate: grades 3-5, Middle/Junior: grades 6-8 and Senior: grades 9-12. They may submit works in any of the six arts areas: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual arts, Dance Choreography, and Film Production. Special Artists can submit entries in any category. Our Reflections program begins at the local level, advances to PTA Council level, then to State for judging. The State winners of the Award of Excellence are then advanced to National PTA.

This year's theme is " Heroes Around Me." All students that wish to participate in the Reflections Art Program need to fill out the entry form and return it along with their original artwork to their school office by November 1, 2018. All participants will be invited to an Art Show to view the masterpieces created in January. Questions can be emailed to Angie Cause at angiekleincause@yahoo.com. Good luck!

Ask Carrie...

Hi FPCS families! Next week is the end of the first quarter already. I hope that your child is on track to having a successful school year.  If the grades aren't up to par, may I suggest:

1) Every night (Mon-Thur) your student should have a homework time (between 4 p.m.-8 p.m.) where they can finish up some work, study, read, etc.

2) Make sure your child has a good study area with no distractions and electronics put away.

3) Your child should be getting around 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

4) If your child is struggling, they should talk with their teacher (5-12 grade) to let them know. If you have any concerns, call/email their teacher.  If concerns continue, call/email their counselor.

Please email me a question you have regarding things going on at school, parenting, etc... then I will share the answer next week. You know that you are not alone and other parents may have the same concern/question.
