SYNOD NEWS

All Saints Day
On this All Saints Day, we remember those who have died and now rest in God and the hope we share with the communion of saints.

"What joy to know, when life is past,
The Lord we love is first and last,
The end and the beginning!
He will one day, oh, glorious grace,
Transport us to that happy place
Beyond all tears and sinning!
Amen! Amen!
Come, Lord Jesus!
Crown of gladness!
We are yearning
For the day of Your returning!" (O Morning Star how fair and bright)

Who do you remember on this All Saints Day?

Recent Guests at the Synod Office

An Invitation: What will make your heart sing?
You are invited to attend an informational meeting about the 2019 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations at Christian Theological Seminary. It will be held Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 2 - 4 pm in Sweeney Chapel at Christian Theological Seminary, 1000 West 42nd St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46208.

The Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program seeks to strengthen Indiana congregations by providing opportunities for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations, but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry, for discovering what will make the pastor's heart sing. Through funding from Lilly Endowment, Christian Theological Seminary will provide grants of up to $50,000 each directly to Indiana congregations for the support of a renewal program for their pastor.

Please register and find more information about this free information session via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/clergy-renewal-programs-for-indiana-congregations-information-session-2018-tickets-50966682720?aff=ebdssbdestsearch&internal_ref=login

Pastors are encouraged to bring their spouse and a representative of the congregation.

ADVENT JOURNEY
If you are on the lookout for creative ways to enrich your congregation's experience of Advent, you are encouraged to consider Advent Journey: Liturgical Art in Advent ( http://blogs.elca.org/worship/1191/?fbclid=IwAR0LkdJlMb3DdxkH5Wak8Q14W1XVS3_tTOuTfebtvQvVjr844mVoKU4yzpY), a recent posting on the ELCA Worship blog.

The post focuses on a lectionary-inspired design that can be used for projection in worship, incorporated into a congregation's print and/or electronic communications, or translated into banners on fabric or paper.  Accompanying questions invite reflection on each week's texts.

The first in a series, the Advent Journey post is by Indiana-Kentucky Synod artist Linda Witte Henke ( www.lindahenke.com).

CHURCH-WIDE NEWS

Bishop Eaton's October Column for
Living Lutheran

So now what?
Last year it was all Reformation all the time. On this 501st anniversary of the Reformation, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton uses her October Living Lutheran column to call on us to "refocus our attention on the gospel of our freedom, forgiveness and reconciliation given to us through God's indescribable act of love in Christ's death and resurrection." Read her column in English at  https://bit.ly/2NlNPtV and in Spanish at https://bit.ly/2xVgZeQ.

World Aids Day
Dear Partners in Ministry,
I write to you as December is fast approaching. Each year on Dec. 1, people around the globe commemorate World AIDS Day. It is a time when we raise awareness about HIV and its effect on communities. We join to remember all who we have lost. Amid this somber memorial, we look to the future, to all that is still to be done and the hope of continued advances in policy, reducing stigma and discrimination, and in prevention and treatment. Please see a special message from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton.

Lutheran Ethicists Network Gathering 2019
This year's Gathering will explore the mixed deposit of Lutheran social teaching on the stark, and growing, wealth and income inequality of the U.S. We also will explore what can be done. The Gathering has attracted many who are not trained professionals and they have found our meeting intellectually stimulating and welcoming. The mix of rostered leaders, lay, and teaching theologians, in fact, is a great benefit and the topic invites broad participation because it affects everyone in this society. Please click  here for registration information. There is a nominal registration fee of $15. Please join us!
