Mike Meczka
by Buddy Frank

Sometimes you'd like to have an outside professional validate and praise your strategies and methodologies. One way to do it is to use a market research firm. Just make sure that you don't call Mike Meczka of MM/R/C. That's not because he isn't good; he and his firm are widely acknowledged as the best in the industry. The facts are pretty supportive of that claim, since no one else has 35 years of casino research experience, has worked in every jurisdiction in North America, performed over 2 million casino surveys and hosted 2,500+ qualitative interviews with players, employees and gaming executives. If that weren't enough, he and his wife love to gamble. There's simply no one better.

So why not use him?  Because he'll tell you what the research says, which is not always what you want to hear. One would think that's what every research firm does. They're supposed to do that. And yet many firms have been known to work very hard to massage or bend the truth a bit to present the conclusions in a positive and client-friendly way designed to meet management expectations. That's not the Meczka way. "Blunt" is a fairly apt description of his style.

Next Gaming taps into decades of casino operations experience to enter the nascent skill-gaming space

by Frank Legato, CDC Gaming Reports

There are a few relatively young companies arriving at this year's Global Gaming Expo to promote skill-based games, created in an effort that began when Nevada and New Jersey approved games with variable payback percentages according to skill levels.

Most, like Gamblit and GameCo, were founded by executives with experience in the world of video games. One company, however, breaks that mold - Las Vegas-based Next Gaming, LLC. Unlike other companies introducing skill-based games, Next Gaming is run by seasoned executives from the operational side of the gaming industry.

Given that you're a subscriber to CDC Gaming Reports, I think it's safe to assume that you've been to G2E, probably more than once. Several years back I wrote a piece for G2E Freshmen with tips about seeing the show for the first time. Most of my suggestions were obvious to veterans but invaluable to rookies, such as "It's all about the shoes" and "Take twice as many business cards as you think you'll need."

I've attended G2E for more years than I care to admit, including the earlier version known as the World Gaming Congress. And, like many of you, I've been to many NIGA shows and countess other conferences. During that time, I've learned that some folks seem to get more out of these shows than others.
