proposition 1 | the veterans and affordable housing act

Can you believe election is only six days away? Proposition 1, the Veterans and Affordable Housing Act , addresses a top priority for Californians - building affordable homes for veterans, working families, seniors, people with disabilities, Californians who have experienced homelessness, and many others. This measure will issue $4B in general obligation bonds that will provide a consistent funding source devoted to putting more people and families into decent homes. The state’s repayment of the bonds will equate to an annual payment of about $170M per year for 35 years, just .1% of the state’s current annual budget.

San Diego Habitat, as well as Habitat California, the coalition of all 41 Habitat affiliates in California, have officially endorsed the measure, in addition to the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Sacramento Bee, Mercury News, and Fresno Bee.

At Habitat, we believe in the power of a decent, affordable place to call home. On November 6th, vote “YES” on Proposition 1 to help us bring that opportunity within reach of more of our neighbors throughout the state.

the legacy hammer

“I think I mistakenly picked up somebody else’s hammer,” said a first-time volunteer on our job site. The hammer had a name engraved on the side, and the volunteer wanted to make sure it got back to the correct individual.

It is always wonderful when a volunteer asks about one of our inscribed framing hammers because we get to tell the story of The Legacy Hammer. It began with Julia Larsen, a young woman towards the end of her battle with cancer who used her gift from Make-a-Wish to rally her family and friends to build a Habitat house. She was not well enough to build herself, so it was her wish that others serve in her honor. As we prepared for the build event, Habitat decided to create a hammer engraved with her name so her spirit would live forever on our construction sites, building homes for families in San Diego.

Julia was the inspiration for the first Legacy Hammer and serves as continued inspiration for many who volunteer to give their time and resources to make life better for others. Now, we have several hammers engraved with the names of individuals who have left San Diego Habitat in their will or estate plans. Donors who are still building also receive a hammer to display or use at their home as a token of our gratitude. This is a tangible way for us to recognize the gifts that keep on giving, rippling out into the community with a spirit of generosity.

If you have arranged for a bequest or planned gift to San Diego Habitat, please let us know so that we can make sure get your hammer engraved. To learn more about making a planned gift with San Diego Habitat for Humanity, contact Karen Begin at 619-246-1380.
