Melmoth by Sarah Perry
Sarah Perry strikes literary gold again! While
The Essex Serpent was a delightful take on Victorian novels, a la Jane Austen,
Melmoth is an homage to the horrid books from Northanger Abbey, those eerie gothic thrillers certain to make the blood run cold. In Perry's
Melmoth, the reader is swept along on gorgeous, sometimes antiquated, language, taken through notes and letters and a labyrinth of tales, each touching on the mysterious shadow figure, Melmoth. Who is this haunting spirit, and why is it following our heroine (who has a past acquaintance with the macabre)?
This is the rare celebrity memoir in which the author's own voice resonates with clarity and truth. Self-reflective, insightful, and fiercely intelligent, Sally Field hits the perfect note as she unfolds the story of a naïve girl with a difficult family, struggling to forge her own path in a world that refuses to acknowledge her potential. This candid and moving account deserves a standing ovation!
This is a complicated, intense reckoning with family and personal history by one of the sharpest writers out there. Of his mother, Laymon writes: "You gave me a black southern laboratory to work with words. In that space, I learned how to assemble memory and imagination when I most wanted to die."
This is a fascinating novel set during New York City's Gilded age, centering on the life of Alva Vanderbilt, wife of William K. Vanderbilt and her part in the building of that family's reputation and stature in society. Fans of historical fiction will love this book.
