Some words from Lama Rod Owens during his visit to Durham last week:

"One thing that is on my mind is how important it is for me to be in the world right now.  In many ways, I am a person of the world.  I am living in the world.  I am rooted in the world.  The world is where everything is happening for me.  The Dharma, the practice of Buddhism, is what is drawing me into the world right now and everything that is happening -- the good and the bad.

"I'm not necessarily an engaged Buddhist.  We don't identify Radical Dharma as an engaged Buddhist tradition, primarily because Buddhism doesn't engage anything except our minds -- it is our bodies that engage the world, it is our senses that engage the world.

"So, Buddhism, the Dharma, moves through our own embodiment into the world, and that is what touches the world.  I'm the one who is engaged in the world, not Buddhism.  And that is a really important distinction for our work.  It is me that has to change...  In Radical Dharma, in this tradition, it is me, it is my body, it is my engagement, it is the work that Dharma is doing to transform my mind.  My mind transforms my body, and my body is what is moving through the world, engaging with you."

Sangha means spiritual community, and it is treasured because without it awakening cannot be sustained."
Jack Kornfield,  After the Ecstasy, the Laundry

Sangha is one of the precious jewels of Buddhist practice, yet when new to a sangha, it can be difficult to meet others, learn what programs are offered, and feel a sense of belonging. The Welcoming Committee was formed to make this process easier, help newcomers feel welcome, and foster the experience of connection and community. Our intentions include having a diverse committee that will support a rich, inclusive sangha where all feel welcome and safe.

To give newcomers an overview of our sangha and its offerings, we've developed a brochure,  Welcome to Triangle Insight
We're also available to talk with you at the end of Wednesday sangha, and we're providing name tags for those open to wearing one. The name tags are reusable, and we'll keep them for you between meetings. These are just a few of our initiatives and ideas. As a new committee, our plans are a work in progress, and we're very interested in your suggestions, feedback, and questions.  Our members and our other initiatives are listed on our  web page . Please talk with one of us or email us at  [email protected] .

With shared commitment to the dharma, we hope our work will be of benefit to all who join us in this practice.

Advance Care Planning:                     What Do I Need to Know?
with Betsy Barton

We'll go over the basics of advance care planning - what it is, why it's important to think about our health care preferences BEFORE it matters, who we should talk to, and how to talk about these issues.

We will talk about the Five Wishes advance directive form, how  to choose a health care proxy who can advocate for us, and what sorts of things we need to discuss with our proxy before we experience an illness.

JUST OUT:
The Last Straw: A Continuing Quest for Life Without Disposable Plastic.
"Environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck had long wondered where trash goes when we throw it "away." Realizing that what we discard never really goes away, she became concerned about all the disposable plastic that piles up in landfills and clogs our streams. Bryant began saying NO to single-use plastic, and she spent a year discovering ways to live without it. This book documents her journey and the creative alternatives she found.

"[There will be] books to buy, snacks to eat, fun art to make and take, recycled and environmentally friendly displays to enjoy. Bryant will read from and discuss the book.  If you can't attend, [the RCWMS will have soon] instructions for ordering the book."

* A READING FROM THE NEW BOOK, and lots of fun for everyone at the Scrap Exchange. 2pm Nov. 11. Don't be late!

Study Groups on Touching the Infinite
with Ron Vereen

In September 2014, Ron began offering two integrated study and practice groups using Rodney Smith's books,  Stepping out of Self-Deception followed by an exploration of  Awakening: A Paradigm Shift of the Heart. Beginning July 2016, the study groups used Joseph Goldstein's recent book,  Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening, as a means of going more deeply into the study of the Satipatthana Sutta and the variety of practices the Buddha offers as the direct path to awakening.

Beginning January 2019, we will resume our exploration of the Satipatthana Sutta using Rodney Smith's commentary on this teaching in his new book, Touching the Infinite: A New Perspective on the Buddha's Four Foundations of Mindfulness.
Rodney has offered to participate in least two Skype sessions with the groups as a way to enhance our experience by engaging us in a dialogue about this important text and our practice.

The groups meet monthly and are open to those with any level of meditation experience. There is no charge for this activity, with donations accepted to help support Ron's study and practice and to cover the costs for the use of the facility.  A few spaces remain in the groups, and to help in the decision-making process, it is anticipated we will meet through February 2020 and members are asked to commit to attend as many sessions as possible.  if you would like to register or need additional information, please contact Ron at [email protected] (please indicate whether you would prefer the morning or afternoon group).

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

with Cornelia Kip Lee, M.Ed.
This class provides a thorough grounding in mindfulness meditation, body awareness and gentle, mindful yoga, which serve as foundations for participants to recognize how they typically react to inner and outer sources of unhappiness and stress in ways that cause more suffering. Through mindfulness practices and exercises, participants increase their capacity for present-moment awareness, and for responding in ways that are more beneficial for themselves and others, leading to improvements in wellbeing. The class is conducted in a safe, supportive environment and includes guided instructions, group dialogue and discussions, home practice assignments and downloadable audio files.

Cost:  Sliding scale of $250 - $350

Cornelia Kip Lee, M.Ed., attended and completed the 6-day MBSR Teacher Training Intensive through the UC San Diego Mindfulness-Based Professional Training Institute, and is enrolled in the Institute's MBSR Teacher Certification Program. She is also a Trained Teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion, has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1998, and teaches mindfulness and self-compassion classes throughout the Triangle.

SpiritFr
Spiritual Friends Groups

When we experience suffering within and around us, the inner critic of judgmental mind can fill our thoughts with blame, shame, and ill will. As Christina Feldman notes in Silencing the Inner Critic , ". . . it is essential to mark the distinction between the voice of the inner critic and our capacity for discernment and discriminating wisdom." It is discriminating wisdom, not judgmental mind, that "inspires us to act in ways that bring suffering and harm to an end." However, as she points out, this doesn't mean turning away from our judgmental mind. "Instead of fleeing the painfulness of the judgmental mind we can turn toward it, sensing that everything we are invited to understand in the journey of awakening can be understood within the judgmental mind."

Our Kalyana Mitta and Racial Affinity groups offer a special opportunity to develop this understanding by bringing the judgmental mind into relational practice. Rather than reject or shame our inner critic, we share it with trusted spiritual friends who hold it with tenderness and care. In the words of Christina Feldman, "We can begin to sense that the inner critic truly warrants compassion, as does any suffering and affliction...we need to turn our attention to the judgmental mind and embrace its pain with the same mindfulness we would bring to a pain in our body or to another's sorrow." Our spiritual friends groups help us open to that pain so we can release it and move from aversion to understanding, from critique to compassion. This is the beautiful gift of spiritual friends as we journey together on this path with heart.

New KM Group
We are forming the Durham Young Adults KM Group, for those in their 20s and 30s. A Kalyana Mitta group for members in the same phase of life can offer a special community for the spiritual growth of each member and the group as a whole.

We currently have openings in four groups:
  • Raleigh KM Group
  • Insight Dialogue KM Group for individuals with Insight Dialogue experience
  • Secular Buddhism KM Group: Study Group
  • Durham Young Adults KM Group, which is being formed
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro KM Group  has a waiting list.

For details about any of these groups, please visit our List of KM Groups web page talk with Sarah Tillis, KM Coordinator, or email her at [email protected] .

If you would like to join a group, be on a waiting list, or if you would like to start a new group, please send us a KM-RA Questionnaire,  and/ or contact Sarah Tillis, KM Coordinator

For information about our KM program, please visit our KM web page .

Members of our Racial Affinity groups continue to deepen self-awareness around issues of race in small, racially homogeneous groups that integrate the dharma into members' personal and collective exploration. Waking up to white supremacy and the ways we have internalized it is a painful process, and the acceptance we bring to each other, as well as our shared understanding of the dharma, helps us to heal and strive to act more constructively in the world.

To support this process, groups follow Triangle Insight's  Mindful Sharing Guidelines  a nd Ruth King's Guidelines for Cultural Affinity Groups .

Racial Affinity group members share a commitment to racial equality and are guided by Ruth King's work, yet each group develops and evolves in its own way. At the moment, one of our established groups reports that they would love to welcome two new members. They have just begun reading and doing the practices in Resmaa Menakem's book: My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies

Another book many of us are reading now is Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation by Rev. angel Kyodo williams, Lama Rod Owens, and Jasmine Syeduallah.  Additional information and resources are on the Racial Affinity Groups web page .

If you're interested in joining a Racial Affinity group or would like more information, you are invited to contact Karen Ziegler, RA Coordinator -- email Karen at [email protected] .

Our community began to form these groups after some of us attended a retreat with Ruth King, and she has a new book out called Mindful of Race. She will be with us in March 2019 and will be doing a retreat with the same name. If you are interested in informal discussions of this book in the meantime, please email Karen.

The KM-RA Coordinating Team of Sarah Tillis, Karen Ziegler, Tamara Share and Tom Howlett expresses deep gratitude for the dedication of our sangha. May our Kalyana Mitta and Racial Affinity groups be of great benefit to all.

The Shramadana Project
A Volunteer Initiative  of Triangle Insight

The Shramadana Project (SP) has been a volunteer initiative of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community that was organized to address some of the interests expressed within the sangha and for outreach to the community-at-large. Visit the SP website.
Mary Mudd has been the SP coordinator since its inception, and we would like to express our deep gratitude to her for her commitment and dedication to this work.  At our last meeting, Mary announced that she plans to step down, and the group looked at the question of whether the SP was going to be relevant in its current role given the anticipated changes in the governance structure of Triangle Insight.  You can review these minutes here as well as further information and minutes of these meetings on the SP page of our website.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES for COMMUNITY ACTIVITY may also be found on the webpage:
  • list of community organizations seeking volunteers to further their missions of nonviolence, racial and social equity, and supporting youth. If you know of other groups to add to this list, please send a note with their contact information to Mary Mudd.
  • Retreats/Workshops. Several of these events have been organized over the years, most recently the Insight Dialogue New Year's retreat in January with Phyllis Hicks as well one with Jeanne van Gemert and Ron Vereen in May. We recently participated with a collaborative group to bring Lama Rod Owens to the Triangle from Oct. 22 - 29, 2018 and will be planning two residential retreats this spring: Mindful Race with Ruth King, and a Memorial Day Weekend retreat with Jeanne van Gemert and Ron Vereen.

  • REAL Durham builds relationships across lines of privilege, race and class to improve economic stability for everyone. It uses a racial equity lens to connect those with and without privilege for the purpose of transferring power and better positioning those without privilege to achieve financial stability. Volunteer training is held several times a year - check out their website for more information.

Workshops Bein g O ffered

In response to our efforts to engage the Buddhist teachings around the issues of Racial Justice and Diversity, we would like to recommend the training opportunities available through  OARNC (Organizing Against Racism NC)as a first step in this investigation.

Eighteen  of us from Triangle Insight have already participated in these workshops and they come highly recommended, so you are encouraged to participate if interested.  If three or more attend an event from our sangha, you will each get a discount on the fee for being a part of the Triangle Insight Meditation Community.

TI  is contributing $500 to start a scholarship fund for this purpose, and the community is invited to join the initiative by contributing specifically to the scholarship fund.  The fund will be available to support TI community members in attending OARNC or other similar trainings. The goal of the initiative is to help individuals and the community to deepen their understanding of the way the mind and human systems are limited by unexamined views of race. The scholarships will be available on a case by case basis to help supplement the cost of registration. To contribute now through PayPal, please donate here.

OARNC offers two phases of training, and the latter trainings are designed to assist us in bringing this knowledge back to our community so as to guide us more skillfully in addressing these issues in Triangle Insight. Please visit their website by clicking on the link above for descriptions of these phases of training.

Please contact us at  [email protected] if you:
1) have any questions about this initiative
2) would like to be considered for a scholarship
3) want to contribute toward a scholarship, and
4) wish to be a part of the core group to discuss our plans after completing the trainings.

insightdialogue
The Practice of Insight Dialogue
at Triangle Insight

Insight Dialogue is an interpersonal meditation practice and is offered at Triangle Insight once monthly, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month. It brings the mindfulness and tranquility of silent meditation directly into our experience with other people. The new website for Insight Dialogue is an excellent resource for learning more about the practice: www.metta.org

The evening begins with silent meditation practice, followed by gentle mindful movement, and then shifting into dyad practice where interpersonal mindfulness is explored with a partner in response to a contemplation that is offered. The dyad practice is optional so that anyone who chooses to remain in silent practice may do so, rather than shifting into dyad practice. One can investigate the guidance of the contemplation internally, noticing the moment by moment unfolding of internal experience. Also note that the ID practice goes from 6:30 to 8:30 PM to allow for more spaciousness and time for questions.  We hope you will be able to join us.

In addition to Triangle Insight, there are a variety of other meditation opportunities of which we would like for you to be aware. Rather than list them all here, we wanted to point you to the "links" section of our website at Triangle Insight.  There are other sitting groups in the community whose practice is similar to ours, as well as resources for retreat centers and other websites, both locally and nationally.  We do not offer an endorsement of these sites, but rather a suggestion for your exploration to see if any may have useful information to support your practice of insight meditation.
