Partnering for Success:
Ease of Decorative Trivalent Plating

In business since 1968, Medeco is a market leader in locks and locking systems for security, safety, and control. Their customer base includes wholesale and retail security providers, original equipment manufacturers, institutional, commercial, industrial, and residential end-users. Medeco® is an ASSA ABLOY Group company. The ASSA ABLOY Group is the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of locks and associated products, dedicated to satisfying end-user needs for security, safety and convenience.

At their Virginia based plating facility, Finishing and Plating Manager Leslie Samuel oversees the operation of Utilite round return rack line and a barrel line. Focused on quality and operational efficiency, the team produces approximately 27,000 parts per day in a single shift. For years they were running a standard hexavalent chromium plating process. Rejects with the hexavalent process were averaging 20% due to yellowing,  burning and whitewash. This (read more...)
PRODUCT SHOWCASE: COLSID APD

COLSID APD for acid zinc plating is a concentrated blend that produces brilliant, bright deposits in an ammonium chloride and potassium chloride plating process.  This proprietary process is ideal for high production throughput barrel lines. It contains state-of-the-art surfactants and additives that are designed to handle the heaviest loads in the industry. Because this unique blend offers extreme tolerance to contaminants, recent customers who have made the switch from their standard acid zinc reported increased production and cost efficiency thanks to the  higher cloud point and better tolerance to impurities from drag in. COLSID APD also c ontains a special ductilizer compound to ensure an extremely ductile deposit while maintaining optimal brightness.

Having trouble with the cloud point on your acid zinc process? Need to improve tolerance to organic contaminants in order to maintain your high production throughput?

TECH FEATURE: Q&A Expert Clinic
Fixing Salt Spray Failures After Passivating, Baking

Mark Adams, Technical Account Manager, was the featured plating expert in the November Issue of Products Finishing magazine!  Read his Q & A clinic here   w here he tackles the common challenge faced by acid-zinc platers who perform hydrogen embrittlement relief on fasteners and often find themselves double handling parts. Mark examines the common factors in relationship to the passivate and discusses newer technology alternatives to address the situation.

If you are facing  a scenario that requires double handling of parts in order to ensure corrosion protection is achieved after hydrogen embrittlement relief, r each out to your Columbia Chemical Technical Specialist or submit your problem directly to  [email protected]
RECOGNIZING OUR GLOBAL PARTNERS
High Demand for TriCOL Decor Continues

Asif Nizami, Director of Quality Metal Products in Chennai, India.
As REACH legislation and increasing regulatory changes continue to impact finishers who export into the EU, Columbia Chemical has seen a nearly 50% increase in the last 18 months in decorative trivalent plating line installations in the global market across multiple industries. One of the most recent installations took place in India in conjunction with Columbia's longtime partner, CMF and their customer Quality Metal Products in Chennai. The customer was extremely pleased with the line installation and the finished product. Congratulations to the team on this successful installation!
As word continues to spread about the ease of use of the TriCOL Decor plating system as well as the high L-value and stability of the chloride-based process, additional TriCOL Decor installations have taken place in both Thailand and Taiwan with great success. ASK THE EXPERT TRIVALENT PLATING WEBINARS A HIT
Both 2018 and 2019 Webinars Are Still Available

Presented in conjunction with Products Finishing Magazine, our popular Ask The Expert Webinars on the topic of decorative trivalent chromium plating continue to draw interest and follow up. Both webinars are still available on demand.

The 2019 Ask the Expert webinar on Trivalent Chromium Process Capability Study for OEMs reviews the characteristics of trivalent chromium which impact corrosion resistance, evaluates test matrix variables such as chrome thickness levels and STEP values and presents performance results of exterior corrosion testing between trivalent and hexavalent. OEMs and Tier Suppliers, engineers, quality control and plating shop owners all benefit from this presentation. The full Q&A session at the end is also included in the recording.  2019 Webinar Available on Demand. Click Here!
The 2018 Ask the Expert Webinar entitled Hexavalent  to Trivalent: Making the Switch  is also available for download. This webinar offers an overview and comparison of the general process differences and an in-depth look at the line conversion from hexavalent to trivalent chrome. A cost analysis of waste treatment savings is presented followed by a brief case study. The presentation is suited for plant managers, purchasers, lab technicians, engineers, and line operators who are interested in the process of converting a line and learning about gains in process and production efficiency, improvements in employee safety, decreased number of rejects, and substantial savings in waste treatment costs.  2018 Webinar Available on Demand.
