Infused with passion: Twenty years ago, Ken Lewis had a vision. When he purchased a plot of land that was, essentially, a flood berm, people laughed. But in the past two decades, he's transformed an empty space - conveniently located at the gateway to Kentucky's Bourbon Trail - into a successful business and distillery. Four Legs Good? Second Four Legs Better...
In February, Seven Stills first released our distillation of Sante Adairius Rustic Ales' "Four Legs Good" Blond Quad. Diageo invests in Westward American Single Malt
By Susannah Skiver Barton, Whisky Advocate
Another American whiskey brand is partnering with a major multinational spirits company. Just days after Wyoming Whiskey revealed it was entering a strategic partnership with Edrington Group, Diageo has announced that it will invest in Westward American single malt through its Distill Ventures unit. The whiskey is made at House Spirits Distillery in Portland, Oregon, and the deal includes investment in both the facility and inventory, as well as the Westward brand. Majority ownership and independent control remain with Westward's founders and current investors, and existing staff, including head distiller Christian Krogstad, will stay on to make the whiskey.

South African cocktail bar Cause Effect has launched its latest drinks menu, which focuses on the science of taste and flavour. |
The new cocktail list, called Tastebuds and Molecules, aims to demonstrate how taste is created by the mind, drawing on influences from an individual's tongue, sense of smell and life experiences.

Ohio school to offer degree in 'craft beverages'
By Rick Armon, Beacon Journal/Ohio
|
Lourdes University is a Catholic, liberal arts school in Sylvania, Ohio.
|
Terry Keller noticed something interesting when he joined Lourdes University several years ago. There seemed to be a lot of gatherings at craft breweries.
A former resident of the craft beer-rich Grand Rapids, Mich., Keller, who is Lourdes' vice president of academic affairs, has watched the meteoric rise of the craft brewery industry in recent years, along with the growth in local wineries and distilleries. He saw an opportunity for higher education to step in. He and others at Lourdes, a Catholic liberal arts school in Sylvania in Northwest Ohio, are developing Ohio's first bachelor's of science degree devoted to craft beverages. Read more

Scottish Craft Distillers Association rebrands as Scottish Distillers Association
By Sean Murphy, Scotsman Food and Drink
|
|
|
Alan Wolstenholme, chair of The Scottish Distillers Association. |
A national association that aims to represent and promote distillers in Scotland is relaunching as it widens its remit within the fast-growing Scottish spirits sector. Garnering a lot of discussion of late, the growing call to clarify what actually constitutes a Scottish gin, vodka or rum has hit the headlines once more this week. Now, a group that was set up to promote Scotland's position as a global centre of excellence in the creation of premium quality spirits, has rebranded itself and widened its remit in a bid to help create more transparency within.

#HurricaneFlorence - Fortunate in Statesville
We at Southern Distilling Company, and our local community in Statesville, NC, were very fortunate to have avoided a significant impact from #HurricaneFlorence in our region. We were prepared for the worst, yet only received some moderate wind gusts and periodically heavy rains, with no major damage or flooding. We wish everyone in Florence's path had been so lucky. We will continue to offer complimentary tours for any rescue/recovery effort volunteers and #linemen who are returning home after completing their efforts to return things as close back to normal as possible for the victims of the Hurricane.

Drinking stories: The man behind Danville, Kentucky's newest distillery project shares his vision for 240-acre farm
By Ben Kleppinger, The Advocate-Messenger
|
|
|
Francesco Viola, owner of the Luca Mariano bourbon brand, stands in front of the historic William Crow House on a farm he hopes to develop into a distillery attraction over the next 12 years. (Photo by Ben Kleppinger) |
Francesco Viola's family has a long-standing tradition of making things themselves. They would grow their own gardens, cook their own food, even distill their own bourbon whiskey. Viola said despite living in Italy, his grandfather and great-grandfather were both considered "master distillers" of the very American drink.
That distilling gene got passed down to Viola, who would sometimes make bourbon almost casually, as a way to pass the time.

American Roots: NYC whiskey distillery takes spirit
straight from farm to table
By Emily DeCiccio, Fox News
|
"There's still a great story to be told about rye whiskey as not only a resolute American spirit, but also a really interesting agricultural and cocktail context for New York," says Allen Katz, the co-founder of New York Distilling Company. |
Americans across the country pride themselves of making a living with their very own hands, and Fox's "American Roots" focuses on hardworking citizens who do just that.
In the New York Distilling Company (NYDC), a Brooklyn-based craft distillery, men and women preserve a long-standing tradition that takes rye whiskey from the farm straight to your cocktail glass. Read more.
