Series:   "Belonging"

Sermon :   "God's Key to Overcoming Loneliness"

Scripture :  Romans 12:16, and 15:17

This Sunday
Last week Pastor Laura helped us understand how to intentionally move from seeking to be inclusive, to becoming more welcoming, to becoming a place of belonging. She described beautifully our focus for this coming year. This week I 'll be continuing on that theme and share one more piece of the sabbatical findings; an issue that surrounds us on all sides as we seek to build a ministry of belonging here in Bellevue. It is the issue of loneliness. It is an issue that crosses all social and socio-economic boundaries. It tears at the fabric of our society, and certainly at the fabric of our faith. We are, by design, created to be social creatures. There are times, however, for a variety of reasons, that we find ourselves, not only alone, but lonely. It is in those times that things like depression, anxiety, even fear can set in and take over. Loneliness comes in all kinds of flavors, and for all kinds of reasons and in all matter of levels. Yet loneliness is something for which we have a response. It is a response of belonging. So as we explore the hoped for movement from being inclusive, to welcoming, to belonging let's add a few things to the scriptural foundation of that process. To prepare please read Romans 12:16 and 15:7

Stretching for the Gospel

As  October 1 approaches, I am looking at how things will change when my schedule has fewer hours attached to my work at Aldersgate because I'm moving from working half-time at the church to working quarter-time. As I've said before, I will still be the Associate Pastor and you are still welcome to contact me for whatever you want. My commitment to being your pastor hasn't changed and won't change in the foreseeable future. However, I will have fewer hours in my week to work on the church business. The big change that you may notice is that I will be less likely to step in and do something, and instead I'll work to transition some of you more fully into leadership roles to get things done, especially in creation of images for first service worship, pastoral care, and other tasks. I will spend one less day each week in the church office and I may be absent from events that other staff can attend. That said, I'm still figuring out all the details of the schedule and how I can make it work. I would like to hear your ideas and feedback. Please stay in touch about how this works.

October also brings some unique opportunities for me as your pastor. First, the congregation at Kennydale UMC is interested in forming more of a connection between our churches. There may be reason to collaborate around projects and ministry areas as they move into what God has planned for them for the future. To begin to develop that connection, I will be guest preaching there on  October 7. Please pray for me and for them and for the Spirit to be with us. We are looking at dates in the spring when their Pastor, Rev. Dr. Kathy Morse might be able to join us in worship as well. Second, I will be attending the Residents in Ministry (RIM) retreat during the second week of October. RIM is a retreat for all provisional elders in the Pacific Northwest conference of the United Methodist Church to talk about how our formation is going as pastors. During this first of the RIM retreats, I'm told that we will be developing tools to help us become more culturally competent in our ministry settings. As I learn more about what that means, I'll let you know. However that means that I will also be away from you on  Sunday October 14. I know you are in good hands, since Pastor Brad will be with you. I don't want anyone to think that I'm leaving you just because I'm going to be away for two Sundays in a row. In both cases, I will be with you in Spirit representing you in other parts of the United Methodist connection. The third unique thing going on for me in October is that all the clergy will be gathering for what is called the Gathering of the Orders in Wenatchee later in the month and they've asked me to be on the worship planning team. That won't be over a  Sunday so I won't miss a third worship experience with you, but I will be away again, this time helping to plan worship that is (if it goes well) both uplifting and deeply rooted in Christ for clergy from all over the Pacific Northwest.

I mention all this now because I'm feeling stretched to be present as your pastor and also present with other United Methodists around the area. You may feel it too. However that feeling of being stretched is surely a sign of the work of God among us. Our Wesleyan heritage honors how we are connected to each other and to be connected, sometimes we get to be stretched. As my physical therapist sometimes tells me, stretching is good for me. It keeps my muscles from building up scar tissue that is painful and stretching facilitates a good range of motion.

After last week's sermon, someone suggested to me that we should divide up the sanctuary into three sections, the way that I suggested an airplane could be divided up. Then during the sermon, a third of the congregation could sleep, a third could play board games, and the final third could watch movies. Instead of those activities, let me suggest we should be stretching. Let's stretch our minds to imagine a little more clearly what the kingdom of God would look like in our context. Let's stretch our hearts to care a little more deeply about those around us who are feeling disconnected. Let's stretch our arms to reach a little more fully out into the world around us so God's love is known and shared and shown. If you all get up to stretch next time I get up to preach, I'll know why. I'll see you this  Sunday then again on  October 21
MINISTRY NEWS
Mod Fundraiser
Thank you to everyone who came out to support the youth by dining at Mod Pizza last week. It was awesome to see the Aldersgate family out in full force all throughout the day! We are excited to announce that we raised $290.62. We were also graciously given an additional $33 from those who couldn't make it to Mod for a total of $323.62. A BIG Thank you from Aldersgate's Youth!
World Communion Sunday
Sunday, October 7
We will take a special offering on World Communion Sunday, October 7.  Your gift matters!  Gifts fund graduate racial-ethnic World Communion Scholarships, with at least one-half of the annual amount reserved for ministries beyond the United States.  Donations also provide for undergraduate U.S. Ethnic Scholarship and Ethnic In-Service Training programs.  The World Communion Sunday offering empowers a diverse mix of national and international ethnic students.  Thank you for your generous gift!
Update on The Way Forward  and General Conference 2019
Please find attached three documents that may be helpful as background to the conversations we will have throughout this fall about inclusion, welcoming, and belonging in the church. Please review these documents as we move toward General Conference in February, 2019. The committee designing a process for Aldersgate to Consider becoming a Reconciling Congregation (CRC) is planning an evening informational session to share more about what has brought United Methodists to the point of a special General Conference and what it may mean for the future on  Monday, October 22 at 7pm. Please mark your calendars and bring your questions.
  • First, click here to read a summary of the three plans that General Conference will consider in February based on an article written for the United Methodist News Service this summer.
  • Second, the Western Jurisdiction leaders and bishops announced this week that they endorse one of the three plans that will be before General Conference in February. Click here to read their press release.
  • Finally, to read a timeline of the history that brought our denomination to the point of needing the General Conference that has been called for February of next year click here.
S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please contact Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church.
Membership Roll
It is time to update the church membership rolls. Every year Betty Fredeen, our Membership Secretary, reviews the church membership and mails out letters to members who, according to our records, have not attended Aldersgate or contributed in the last two years. The purpose of the letter is not to push people away but to let them know we are interested in them, to see if they want to remain members, and to keep our membership records accurate. We need your help. The members listed below did not respond to our letter or the letter was returned by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable. If you know them, please encourage them to reply to the letter or contact the church office. If you have any information about them, (current contact information, did they moved away, are they attending another church, etc.), please notify Betty Fredeen (425-746-5113) or the church office.

These people were mailed two letters over the last two years. They will be removed from membership at the 2018 Charge Conference unless we hear from them.

These people were mailed one letter in 2018 and will be mailed another in 2019. They will be removed from membership in 2019 unless we hear from them.

Injuries often can be repaired if the victim does not bleed out.

League speakers and materials will help make sense of the language that you will see on your ballots about the four statewide initiatives this fall. See Pastor Laura with questions or to sign up to bring snacks that we can offer as a gesture of welcome to our guests for this event.
